  • The UWSOD's Office of Educational Partnerships (OEP) is working to make sure that students, particularly those from underserved backgrounds, become exposed to opportunities in oral health during the early years of their education. This summer, students from Dare to Dream, Making Connections and the Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) all visited the School of Dentistry to try their hands at dental practices. Led by UW School of Dentistry students, high schoolers take part in a hands-on introduction to oral health professions that provide a glimpse of what could be if students choose to pursue dental assisting, dental hygiene, and/or dentistry as their future path. They also serve as one-on-one opportunities for dental students to engage with young scholars, share their journeys and inspire future colleagues and dental team members. “For me, I wanted to volunteer because I know how beneficial the program was since I’d gone through it,” said Zain Natha, a D4 student who went through SHPEP herself. “I do think there’s a benefit in volunteering in the sense that you remember that you were in [the younger students’] shoes and you’re going to be helping the next generation of dentists.” Read more about the impact of the OEP and the pathway programs they collaborate with in order to inspire the next generation of dental students on our website: https://lnkd.in/gRbwUwXG

  • The University of Washington’s Schools of Dentistry and Medicine (University of Washington - School of Medicine) are pleased to announce a new collaborative initiative. The two renowned health education entities will join forces to embark on development of an Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) residency program. The program will be housed under UW Medicine’s Graduate Medical Education (GME) Office and include partnerships with community health partners. A key feature of the one-year residency program will be its deep connection to community health partners around the state and the placement of residents in those communities for the duration of their clinical training. The UWSOD Office of Educational Partnerships is in talks now with community partners to establish these clinical sites. “While AEGD programs currently exist in the region, our program would offer access to UWSOD’s world-class faculty and expertise in dental specialties,” says Dr. Amy Kim, Director of the School of Dentistry Office of Educational Partnerships. “An AEGD program at UW also has the potential to recruit and retain newly graduated dentists to underserved communities in our region, benefitting our communities and helping us fulfill our School’s mission of Advancing Oral Health for All.” Read the full statement about the AEGD initiative on our website: https://lnkd.in/gPAWeFrM

  • Dr. Shayan Niaki, a second-year prosthodontics resident, has been selected as the 16th recipient of the David H. Wands Fellowship in Graduate Prosthodontics. The Wands Fellowship is the most prestigious endowed graduate fellowship in dentistry at the University of Washington and one of the largest private endowments awarded through any graduate prosthodontics program in the country. Established by Dr. David Wands, who graduated from the program in 1972, the intent of the fellowship is to support and inspire its recipients to pursue an academic career, either full or part-time, in prosthodontic education. “Dr. Niaki was chosen because he displays the superlative characteristics of a Wands Fellow, namely honesty, integrity, selfless service, and a desire to teach and disseminate prosthodontic knowledge,” said Dr. Van Ramos, Director of the Graduate Prosthodontics program. In addition to serving as Associate Dean, Dr. Coldwell is a full Professor in the UW Department of Oral Health Sciences and has had a remarkable career with significant academic and research accomplishments. “Dr. Coldwell’s wealth of experience is a great asset to our School and its students,” said Dean André Ritter. “She has spent many years helping students navigate the myriad of expected, and unexpected, challenges that can confront students during their dental education.” The School of Dentistry celebrates Dr. Coldwell’s dedication to our School and community as her commitment thus far has been unwavering. Take a look back at Dr. Coldwell (along with some other familiar faces) posing as part of the group of preceptors and students from the 2004 Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Program.
