We actively partner with our clients and other contributors to the design process, adding their individual expertise and perspectives to the creative mix at the earliest possible time. We take very seriously the hard realities of development—public approvals, neighborhood support, market demand, and cost controls—embedding them in our program and process at every step. We work on a variety of building types, but the core of our practice is working on mixed-use and multifamily projects. We're thrilled to share the transformation of the historic Belfry Apartment Project in Minneapolis, a Finance & Commerce 2023 Top Project recipient, where BKBM partnered with Trellis, UrbanWorks Architecture LLC, and Frana Companies to blend innovation and preservation seamlessly. This project involved converting a historic church and school into vibrant multi-family housing, retaining the original charm while meeting modern needs. Our team turned the sanctuary into a versatile space for Calvary Church and community activities, reinforced the sanctuary floor, and added necessary modernizations like a new elevator, wheelchair lift, and mechanical equipment. The sanitary sewer retrofit required a creative solution to connect within Elliot Avenue, minimizing public disruption. Adjacent to the church, we designed a three-level apartment building with unique structural and drainage challenges, collaborating closely with the contractor, mechanical engineer, and architect to ensure success. The Belfry Project exemplifies BKBM's commitment to delivering innovative, high-quality solutions.
