Yesterday U.S. Pipe sponsored the lunch for the Birmingham Chapter of the AWWA Young Professionals. It was a great opportunity for young professionals in the water industry, and in college to discuss with Engineers and suppliers in the water/wastewater field. Lots of great topics and projects were discussed, and one notable topic was covered at length; the current EPA evaluation of the risks of PVC pipe and whether it should be banned. I had the pleasure of attending the Center for Smart Infrastructure’s (CSI) Pipeline System Testing for Hazard Resilience Workshop on October 11. This comprehensive workshop brought together the industry’s best to review seismic resilience of buried pipelines. Experts presented to attendees about hands on experience investigating failure modes, research, developing design standards, and testing procedures related to understanding ground hazards that can threaten the integrity of buried water and wastewater infrastructure. U.S. Pipe began testing our products at Cornell University in 2014 and is continuing to test our products at CSI in Berkeley, CA to better understand how our ductile iron pipe products perform under the various ground hazards: transient ground shaking, fault rupture, differential settlement, landslides, liquefaction, lateral spread. Continuing Education is a constant goal at U.S. Pipe. Yesterday we had the privilege of providing a plant tour to members of the AL/MS AWWA group from various locations from all over Alabama and Mississippi. On top of the tour, we provided a professional level presentation that credited 2 Professional Development Hours (PDH) to those in attendance.
