About us

SwedishAmerican is now UW Health. At UW Health, our commitment is to serve through medical innovation and unparalleled compassion. We provide expertise and quality care to patients and families throughout Wisconsin, Northern Illinois and beyond. In 2015, SwedishAmerican, a community health system based in Rockford, Ill., with a proud 100-year legacy, became part of UW Health. In 2021, the UW Health brand was introduced at SwedishAmerican’s 2 hospitals and 30 primary care and multi-specialty clinic locations across Northern Illinois. Through this partnership, Northern Illinois patients and families have the best of both worlds – a familiar, convenient network of primary and specialty care locations combined with easy access to UW Health experts for highly complex situations, especially for patients with cancer or heart disease. Moreover, mothers and babies – most of whom are cared for at the new Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Rockford – also have easy access to neonatology experts at American Family Children’s Hospital in Madison, in situations when a higher level of care is needed.

  • Advanced practice providers (APPs) are professionals who undergo specialized training and possess unique skills that allow them to perform medical tasks typically carried out by a physician. These dedicated individuals include nurse practitioners, physician assistants, certified nurse midwives, anesthesiologist assistants and certified registered nurse anesthetists, who all serve as an invaluable part of our health care system. September 23 – 27 is National APP Week, a time to recognize and appreciate the remarkable contributions of our APPs. If a UW Health APP has positively impacted your life or the life of a loved one, we would love to hear from you. Please take a moment to share a personal note of thanks and help us show our APPs how much they are appreciated for their, hard work, skill and compassion: https://uw.health/4ewhU74

Chris Albrecht has been a mammographer for the past 12 years, 10 years at the UW Health Belvidere Hospital. She started her career later in life and one of the reasons she became a mammography technician was that she can relate to her patients, getting an exam each year herself. What she finds unique in working in breast care is that mammographers are more than ‘picture takers.’ “We are problem solvers, educators and the biggest cheerleader for taking great care of yourself!” Chris shares that the most rewarding part of her job is helping women with a very important part of their health care. “A mammogram is the best way to detect breast cancer early—it only takes a few minutes and can save your life. I look forward to seeing familiar faces every year, these patients are my Belvidere family.” Outside of work, Chris likes to spend time at her family’s cabin in northern Wisconsin.

Thanks to support from SwedishAmerican Health Foundation, we’re committed to educating parents and creating safe sleep spaces for newborns across northern Illinois.💜💙❤️

𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗦𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀! ❤️ Thanks to your generosity, we are making a life-saving impact on safe sleep practices for newborns across northern Illinois. In the past year, Winnebago County lost 9 precious infants due to unsafe sleep environments. But with your help, we’re working to change that tragic statistic. Your donations have funded the purchase of 3,000 infant sleep sacks, ensuring every baby born at UW Health SwedishAmerican leaves the hospital with a safe sleep solution for home. We also provided 40 cribettes to families who don't have the resources to create a safe sleep space for their babies. These cribettes are more than just a place to sleep—they are a critical lifeline for families in need. Together with the dedicated team at UW Health SwedishAmerican, we’re committed to educating parents and providing the essential resources needed to prevent further tragedies. Your dollars are truly making a difference—thank you for being part of this life-saving mission. Let’s continue to work together to ensure every baby in our community sleeps safely. #SafeSleep
