Volkert, Inc. is an employee-owned infrastructure engineering firm that is ranked in ENR’s Top 100 Design Firms list.
About us
Volkert’s history began in 1925 when it was founded in New Orleans as Doullut & Erwin to provide waterfront and heavy construction services, as well as airport design services beginning in 1927. During World War II, the company contributed to the design and construction of U.S. Navy shipyards for the production of “Liberty Ships” as well as dry docks and self-operating steel and wood docks for the war effort. Following the war, the firm relocated to Mobile, Alabama where it was headed by David Volkert. Volkert acquired the company in 1954 and led its involvement in the design of the U.S. interstate highway system, the largest civil engineering project in history, in nine southeastern states and the District of Columbia. Renamed for Volkert in 1963, and under his leadership, the firm has expanded to provide a wide range of design services in transportation, aviation, construction, public works and utilities, property acquisition, and environmental engineering. Through its accomplished history, Volkert has earned over 60 major engineering awards as well as several inductions into the Engineering Hall of Fame. Volkert is now the largest Alabama-based engineering company and is ranked in the top quartile of the nation’s Top 500 Design Firms. Today, Volkert is listed among the top 1% of engineering companies in the United States and our commitment to serving our clients, our communities, and our nation with excellence is as steadfast as it was over ninety years ago.

Happy Friday everyone. I have some news to share. I wrote a book! Can you believe it? If my High School English teacher could see me now! My goal isn’t to make much money off the book, though I appreciate those who already purchased a copy. Two years ago, I became determined to write my father’s amazing story. An unbelievable tale resembling an epic saga. Like the Old Norse stories, this one had only been verbally passed down from one generation to another. What prompted me to write this book was my dad’s sudden medical situation in August of 2022. I’ll be honest. I did not think he had much time left. My goal was to finish this book as soon as possible so he could enjoy it. I finished it in a year, and it has taken another year to get it published. Thank you all who encouraged me to keep going and for your constructive feedback. I’m happy to say that he is doing extremely well. I’m also ultra excited to say the book was published exactly two years after his surgery. The book Opa: An Eternal Optimist can be found on Amazon.com It’s only in English now, but hopefully one day I’ll get around to translating it into German and Spanish. Here is a link: Amazon.com: Opa: An Eternal Optimist: The First 20 Years: https://a.co/d/7bY2Ifd I won’t give away too much. The story starts with a young boy in Nazi Germany during the war and its aftermath, followed by forced relocation and survival in communist East Germany. After his escape to the West, he makes his way to Canada as a modern-day indentured servant and, once he repays his debt, seeks fortune in the oil refineries of Venezuela. Unfortunately, his long motorcycle journey from Canada ends in Central America. Desperate to cross the Atlantic Ocean to go home, he looks for work as a merchant seaman and ends up in a small island in the Caribbean. Instead of finding a transatlantic steamer, he runs into a group of Mexican tourists and meets my mother. They fall in love and live happily ever after. I wanted to share my story to inspire others to follow their dreams. This is something I have wanted to do for more than 30 years. I just never got around to it. Then, suddenly, the urgency of the moment hit me in the face. Fortunately, I like to write – and I can draw. Oh yes, all illustrations were done by yours truly. I really learned a lot about myself – who I am and what I can achieve. I hope you find the book inspiring. #germany #mexico #canada #ww2 #worldwar2 #Silesia #EastGermany #hope #optimism #history #refugee #immigration
