EXCITING NEWS! We're thrilled to announce the grand opening of Levant Senior Cottages, a brand-new affordable housing community in San Diego’s Linda Vista neighborhood! This groundbreaking development, brought to life by Wakeland Housing and Development Corporation in partnership with San Diego Kind, offers 127 homes specifically designed for low-income seniors aged 55 and older. Levant Senior Cottages is the first project to launch on land provided by the County of San Diego through an innovative initiative to repurpose surplus county sites for affordable housing. This is a monumental step forward in addressing the housing crisis and creating a brighter future for thousands in need. Our residents at Levant will enjoy a rich array of onsite services, including personal and professional development and social activities courtesy of Wakeland, alongside comprehensive medical and social services provided by St. Paul's PACE. These resources will be vital in helping our seniors lead healthier, more stable lives. Affordable housing projects like Levant Senior Cottages are vital for providing stability, security, and opportunities for our seniors. As Wakeland Housing and Development Corporation President and CEO Rebecca Louie emphasized, “So many seniors in San Diego are in crisis, with over 50 percent paying more than half of their income toward rent, struggling to live off fixed incomes while costs are anything but.” This transformative development offers 126 affordable rental homes for low-income seniors, including those with medical frailties. "I was really struggling to have confidence in myself and keep my grades up until I started talking to Mauricio in the After School Program. It's graduation season, and time to reflect on the successes of our youth residents. The story of the college-bound Bajrami triplets truly exemplifies the power of affordable housing and impactful resident services to transform lives. Gzim and his sisters Diellza and Erza have lived at our Village View affordable housing community in San Diego since birth. Throughout their lives, all three triplets have participated the robust resident services programs offered by our partners at City Heights Community Development. Spending years of their education in remote learning due to the COVID pandemic posed challenges to the siblings, but during their senior year, they worked closely with Resident Services Program Manager Mauricio Hernandez Vargas to achieve their college goals. He helped them navigate applications and complicated financial aid forms. Now, Gzim is set to attend Grossmont College studying Psychology, while Erza and Diellza will go to Mesa College, both majoring in Kinesiology. Not only did Allgire do a fantastic job building this project, through their Allgire Foundation they also generously donated Welcome Home Kits filled with essential housewares to each and every senior who moves into this beautiful community. They really care about the people who live in the communities they build!
