Today is the 75th Anniversary of the declaration of Air Force Day! Air Force Day was established on August 1, 1947, by President Truman "in recognition of the personnel of the victorious Army Air Forces and all those who have developed and maintained our nation's air strength." August 1 was chosen to mark the 40th anniversary of the establishment, in 1907, of the Aeronautical Division in the Office of the Chief Signal Officer of the Army.   Air Force Day came into being immediately after the signing of the National Security Act of 1947, although the status of the air element of the military was uncertain. Thus, although it was called Air Force Day, its first celebration was staged by the Army Air Forces and not by the U.S. Air Force.   Underlying the Air Force Day celebration was a need to increase "both official and public awareness of the priority of importance of air forces in any system of national security," according to Mr. Truman. "The great strategic fact of our generation is that the United States now possesses live frontiers -- the frontiers of the air -- and that the oceans are no longer sure ramparts against attack."   In his message to the nation on the first Air Force Day, Mr. Truman said, "I remind all of our citizens that the air power of the nation is essential to the preservation of our liberty, and that the continued development of the science of air transportation is vital to the trade and commerce of a peaceful world." #airforcedayanniversary

Victoria, the great-granddaughter of Joe Goetz, Vice-Chairman of the original Memorial Center Board of Trustees, stopped by the War Memorial Center this morning to show her respect. Joe's name can be seen here in one of the images found on the WMC timeline exhibit located on the 3rd floor at the War Memorial Center. This image took place in 1946, when Civic leaders announced plans for a $5 million memorial complex for veterans, art, and music. Victoria…...thanks for stopping by and continuing the mission of the War Memorial Center: Honor The Dead By Serving The Living.

Jordan Kinkead, Leadership Academy Instructor for the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps, brought his class to the War Memorial Center. Cadets need to complete a specific number of community service hours necessary for their personal, professional, and military progress in this program.   For their community service hours, cadets were asked to complete our updated “WMC Scavenger Hunt Tour” worksheet used for schools, businesses, and organizations who come for a WMC guided tour. This new scavenger hunt includes our newest and permanent exhibits LEST WE FORGET, VIETNAM VETERANS MEMORIAL, HANOI HILTON PRISON CELL, MEDAL OF HONOR, and more.   The cadets did an excellent job following instructions, asking good questions, and completing the tour. https://lnkd.in/g9DzJNvu

The War Memorial Center was offered space by MKE 2024 Host Committee to help bring to life and share the stories of Wisconsin veterans and their families who served and sacrificed for our freedom. The people that came through our War Memorial Center area were very much like the military and their families that serve our country. The enormous variety of cultural backgrounds of delegates, volunteers, veterans, teachers, senators, military, local and national law enforcement officers, and many more was incredible. These people came from places like Kentucky, Virginia, California, Georgia, New York, Iowa, China, New Jersey, Puerto Rico, Switzerland, Australia, Florida, Japan, Ukraine, and many more. The four traveling exhibits with their informational text and images helped to inform, personalize, and share the experiences for each Wisconsin soldier and their family: LEST WE FORGET I AM NOT INVISIBLE DECORATING OUR HEROES MEDAL OF HONOR We spoke with over 150 different people each day last week. When asked why they decided to visit our area, most of their answers centered around the words like: freedom, family, friends, honor, sacrifice, and service. It was truly an honor just to be there and witness this event. https://lnkd.in/gKZCV3Hw
