Unraveling the Fire Sponge Genome We recently collaborated with the Universidade Federal da Bahia and Brigham Young University to assemble the genome of the fire sponge (Tedania ignis), a species known for its ecological and biomedical significance. Despite challenges like repetitive DNA and reactive metabolites that degrade genetic material, we delivered a high-quality assembly: Genome size: 379 Mb N50: 134,971 bp Scaffolds: 63, offering exceptional contiguity BUSCO completeness: 86.4%, among the best for sponge genomes By combining optimized DNA extraction techniques with long-read sequencing, we overcame significant technical barriers, setting a new standard for marine genomics. This work opens doors to research in ecological adaptation, evolutionary biology, and biomedical applications across species. Have a challenging genome to decode?
