Introducing: The HOTEL Act! Just last week, Reps. Chris Smith (R-NJ) and Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL)  introduced the HOTEL Act, bipartisan legislation aimed at bolstering federal efforts to combat human trafficking in hotels. The HOTEL Act will provide an incentive for hotels to train their staff on the signs of human trafficking and equip them with tools on how to respond if they suspect human trafficking is taking place. Hotels whose staff have completed the training can apply to become “preferred places of accommodation” for government travel. This means the hotels will be chosen over hotels that haven’t trained their staff. This achievement would not have been possible without the joint efforts of  the American Hotel & Lodging Association, Ascend Consulting, Hope for Justice, and our dedicated team at PACT. Learn why PACT and AHLA’s No Room for Trafficking partnership is a crucial part of trafficking prevention in hotels in AHLA’s statement on the HOTEL Act: https://lnkd.in/eqEmDyUe

The United States’ PROTECT Act of 2003 allows for the prosecution of U.S. citizens who engage in the sexual exploitation of children abroad, even if the act is legal in the country where it took place. The penalties include up to 30 years in prison. #WeArePACT #WorldTourismDay #SustainableTourism #WTD2024 We encourage you to share this #WorldTourismDay campaign with your community by reposting, sharing, commenting, or liking this post. World Tourism Day is September 27th, 2024. This year’s theme is Tourism and Peace. Federal law prohibits an American citizen or resident to travel to a foreign country with the intent to engage in any form of sexual conduct with a minor (anyone defined as under 18 years old). When an individual travels to a different destination for the explicit purpose of sexually exploiting children, it is known as the Sexual Exploitation of Children in Travel and Tourism (SECTT). The Sexual Exploitation of Children in Travel and Tourism is the opposite of Peace; it fuels the demand for human trafficking and leads to legal consequences for the perpetrators of this crime. Leading up to this year’s World Tourism Day, join PACT as we advocate for responsible and ethical travel while prioritizing the safety and dignity of all children around the world. #WorldTourismDay #SustainableTourism #WTD2024 #EndTrafficking

The Sexual Exploitation of Children in Travel and Tourism (SECTT) is when an individual travels to a different destination for the explicit purpose of sexually exploiting children. Western countries, including the United States, are often complicit in this crime: the U.S. Department of Justice has estimated that about a quarter of SECTT offenders worldwide are U.S. citizens. Thailand, Cambodia, and the Philippines are often highlighted as common destinations for SECTT. Eastern Europe also reports high incidences of SECTT. Whether the travel is domestic or international, by plane or by car: travel and tourism for the purpose of sexually exploiting children is a crime. #WeArePACT #WorldTourismDay #SustainableTourism #WTD2024 We encourage you to share this #WorldTourismDay campaign with your community by reposting, sharing, commenting, or liking this post.
