Wesley on Grand, our Community for Healthy Living in Des Moines, welcomed a new resident recently — and she doesn't fit our typical demographic! Leah Mendelin, a vocal-music major at Drake University, is living on the Wesley on Grand campus as part of an artist-in-residence program. In return for room and board, Leah performs regularly for residents; when she’s not performing, working, or attending class, she’s spending informal time on campus, integrating with residents as part of an intergenerational initiative designed to benefit everyone in the community. We are thrilled to have Leah with us! #drakeuniversity #intergenerational #healthandwellbeing

Passionate about transforming attitudes toward aging.
About us
We don’t buy into the stigma of ageism. We believe everyone should have the opportunity to live a life of continued growth, experience, and meaning — and to pursue joy, regardless of physical, social, or economic circumstances. The experience of aging is shaped by each person — as they see it, define it, and experience it. To demonstrate our commitment to this belief, we have taken up the torch to be the most dynamic and inclusive champion to revolutionize the experience of aging. We serve residents of independent and assisted living, rehabilitation, and memory support. We also offer clients services including home care, adult day, home-delivered meals, and hospice. As a nonprofit organization guided by Christian compassion, we were founded more than 75 years ago as a place for aging Methodist ministers and their spouses to call home. Today, our services are delivered by 1,300 part- and full-time passionate team members throughout the state with a focus on creating opportunities to pursue joy!

It's a big month for WesleyLife — and for anyone who's concerned about the impact of ageism. As we join the American Society on Aging in celebrating Ageism Awareness Day on October 9, we're sharing facts about ageism and ways we can change perceptions. Did you know being the target of ageism can adversely affect health? It's associated with earlier death (by 7.5 years), poorer physical and mental health, and slower recovery from disability. FLIP THE NARRATIVE: Here are three basic ways you can make a positive impact, starting today. 1. Recognize ageism. You can’t change something if you don't realize it needs to be changed. Keep your ears tuned for examples of ageism in everyday communication. 2. Speak up! If you hear something ageist, point it out. "I know you were trying to be kind, but calling that individual 'Sweetie' or 'Gramps' could be viewed as patronizing." 3. Refuse to support ageism! Buying a birthday card for someone who's reaching a milestone age? Avoid those "over the hill" cards and choose one that represents something great about aging. Stay tuned throughout October for additional ways to flip the narrative on ageism. Thanks for joining us in this effort! #ageismawarenessday #healthandwellbeing #ageism #talkaboutageism

Have you received a text message from a "friend" who asks you what time you want to meet for dinner ... but when you respond, it's clear you don't know the person? Have you taken a Facebook quiz that promises you that if you enter your birthdate, you'll "find out who you were in a past life"? Guess what? Both of those are scams designed to steal your personal information. October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and WesleyLife's Information Solutions team is working to educate all of us about ways to stay safe online. Take a moment to read some of their tips in the link below! #cybersecurityawareness #healthandwellbeing

This week is National Employ Older Workers Week — an opportunity for WesleyLife to thank team members of all ages for the contributions they make to our mission every day. Throughout the week, learn from these myths and truths regarding older workers, courtesy of AARP. Then, if you're looking for a career opportunity or know someone who is, visit wesleylife.org/careers to check out our available positions! Myth: Older workers aren’t as mentally sharp as younger workers. Fact: According to a recent American Psychological Association study, older executives actually have higher “crystallized intelligence” — a combination of verbal ability and knowledge born of experience — than their younger counterparts. #employolderworkersweek #healthandwellbeing #seniorliving #DEIB
