Before joining Weyerhaeuser as conservation director last year, Alex Littlejohn worked for The Nature Conservancy in his home state of Mississippi. While he loved his job, after more than 12 years at the global environmental nonprofit, Alex decided it was time for a new challenge and applied for the newly created role he now holds. One year later, Alex spends his days developing and implementing conservation strategies to grow our Corporate Development organization and Natural Climate Solutions business, building partnerships with conservation groups and even doing much of what he enjoyed at TNC. “My favorite part of the job at TNC was land acquisitions,” he says. “At Weyerhaeuser, I get to keep working on those types of conservation transactions, but across a much different footprint and from a different perspective. To me, it’s nothing short of an opportunity of a lifetime.” Learn more about Alex’s career journey: https://lnkd.in/gv52NW-s #TheWeyerhaeuserWay #meetourpeople #conservation

For the third year in a row, our medium density fiberboard (MDF) plant in Columbia Falls, Montana, won the annual Composite Panel Association Safety Innovation of the Year. This year's award was for a proximity warning system to help notify and keep a safe distance between pedestrians and mobile equipment operators. “That’s a lot of innovation coming out of a single team,” says Jordan LeFever, safety liaison and former Health & Safety manager at Columbia Falls. “Columbia Falls stands out thanks to a culture that encourages innovative thinking, collaboration and listening to different perspectives. Not to mention we have some of the best minds in the industry working here.” Learn more about the innovative safety culture at the Columbia Falls plant, which is our only MDF manufacturing facility and the longest-running MDF plant in the world, celebrating 50 years later in 2024! #TheWeyerhaeuserWay #innovation #workplacesafety https://lnkd.in/ghPMWXRW

Forest carbon projects aren’t just for the largest timberland owners. As the benefits of working forests are increasingly understood, landowners of all sizes are taking a closer look at how trees can factor in the global response to climate change. Our own Alicia Robbins explored the topic with professors Shaun Tanger and Brady Self on the latest episode of Timber University. #naturalclimatesolutions https://lnkd.in/ggpimm3d

“My approach to work goes back to how I was brought up,” says Tony Battello, maintenance planner at our plywood mill in Kalispell, Montana. “My parents had a strong work ethic; I guess the old saying would be, ‘It’s the cloth I’m cut from.’ If you work to improve, then you set the example for everybody around you. It also helps create a healthier environment because it brings everybody's individual goals together into a common goal. I want to see this mill achieve great things because when we do, it means the people working here are achieving great things themselves.” For his contributions to reliability and people development, Tony was awarded a 2023 Truly Great Award. #TheWeyerhaeuserWay #meetourpeople

Partnership is more important than ever as record-setting wildfires in Oregon have burned more than a million acres this year. Under an agreement with the Oregon Department of Forestry, Weyerhaeuser provides equipment, crew members and specialized knowledge to help fight wildfire through ODF’s Incident Resources Agreement (IRA). Our local teams have been supporting the Lane 1 Fire outside of Cottage Grove since it began in July, and we are still working in partnership with ODF’s Incident Management Team 1 on suppression efforts. “When we can work together, industry, large landowners and state forestry, that’s when the partnership really shines,” says Jay Christensen, Southern Oregon area manager. “Our team understands our road system, and we understand the ground, which is critical in keeping our communities and forests safe.” https://lnkd.in/eBpz-4ej

Strong relationships are at the cultural core of our sawmill in Raymond, Washington. They're the bonds that connect employees to each other and the community — and one of the first things leaders mention when discussing the mill's improved safety performance or the recent selection of Raymond as our second THRIVE community, a distinction that comes with a $1 million investment over the next several years. "Relationship building is a main pillar of our safety strategy," says Spencer Headley, mill manager. "It starts on the mill floor, with lots of interactions between leaders and hourly employees, and it's deepened by the many connections we all share within our community." Learn more about Raymond's culture of caring and how it's driving improvements at the mill and in the community. #TheWeyerhaeuserWay https://lnkd.in/eBEGJxDq

When an American woodcock made its way from Maine to our forests in North Carolina a few years ago, our wildlife biologists were captivated by the visitor and named him Snoopy. The woodcock made this monthlong, 730-mile journey as part of his annual fall migration — starting in an alder bog near Jackman, Maine, and settling on a 3,000-acre stand of 16-year-old loblolly pines near Elizabeth City, North Carolina. “We discovered Snoopy after University of Maine researchers shared tracking data with our wildlife team,” says Andrew Brown, environmental manager for our timberlands in Virginia and the Carolinas. “It’s a great example of the biodiversity in working forests and how we proactively manage those forests for multiple benefits, including wildlife habitat.” Learn more about Snoopy's journey and how he is contributing to ongoing research on bird populations in working forests. #TheWeyerhaeuserWay #wildlifeconservation https://lnkd.in/ed9RMTEB
