This is very rare footage of Jameson’s mambas mating in the Democratic Republic of Congo. We believe this behavior has never been documented in the wild but we are investigating. The dense Central African rainforests like the DRC’s Okapi Wildlife Reserve don’t expose their wonders so easily, and only the most patient and knowledgeable observers get to witness them. The Jameson’s mamba is a species across the whole of Central Africa. Recorded here is the subspecies with a black tail in the East of its range (Dendroaspis jamesoni kaimosae or "black-tailed Jameson’s mamba"). Photographer and Field Herpetologist Thomas Nicolon was lucky enough to catch this on camera during a recent trip for the #SWMprogramme, focused on sustainable wildlife management. The sighting is so exceptional that he is writing a scientific paper on it. The Reserve is managed by WCS in partnership with DRC’s ICCN( Institut Congolais pour la Conservation de la Nature)). The international trade in endemic species is complex. A new WCS paper, which shares the case of Colombia's poison frogs, highlights the need for improved enforcement of CITES rules and collaborations to combat illegal trade and ensure benefit sharing from any legal trade. Ultimately this will help species and local communities. Said WCS Colombia's German Forero Medina, a co-author: "If Colombia wants to promote #biodiversity as the driver of its economy, we still need to improve biocommerce practices, working with other countries to make sure international trade of endemic species is legal, traceable, and that there is an equitable benefit sharing from these valuables resources, ultimately benefitting the species in the wild and the local communities who share their habitat." "This paper highlights the situation where breeders in importing countries are benefiting economically from commercial trade in endemic species," added WCS's Susan Lieberman, also an author, "some of which have not been exported legally from their range countries—highlighting the need to ensure that any trade in captive bred animals originates only from legally imported parental stock. Furthermore, the economic benefits from trade in importing countries should be shared with the range countries, to enable them to support the conservation of the species and their habitats." Our team in Madagascar is helping conserve the marine landscapes of Antogil Bay. What a wondrous place. ⬇️
--- Nosy Mangabe, a wonder of Antongil Bay! Located in the Bay of Antongil, Nosy Mangabe is a protected area managed by Madagascar National Parks. This exceptional place is home to extraordinary flora and fauna, contributing to the richness of Madagascar's biodiversity. During our visit, we discovered: 🦎 𝐵𝑟𝑜𝑜𝑘𝑒𝑠𝑖𝑎 𝑝𝑒𝑦𝑟𝑖𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑠𝑖 - Peyrieras's pygmy chameleon (known as Amboalava or Tanalahy kely in Malagasy) 🦎 𝑈𝑟𝑜𝑝𝑙𝑎𝑡𝑢𝑠 𝑓𝑖𝑚𝑏𝑟𝑖𝑎𝑡𝑢𝑠 - Giant Leaf-tailed Gecko, 🐒 Lemurs (varika) moving through this rainforest (black and white lemur, …). A breathtaking view stopped us to enjoy the place where the forest meets the ocean. WCS Madagascar, with the support of donors and partners, works for the conservation the marine landscapes of Antogil Bay. The work focuses on promoting sustainable initiatives and raising awareness of the importance of these unique ecosystems. Have you ever visited Nosy Mangabe? Join us on Saturday, April 26, to make tracks for wildlife at the 17th annual WCS Run for the Wild. This year’s event, open to runners and walkers alike, is inspired by gharials. These charismatic crocodilians face dire threats due to habitat loss, pollution, and human persecution. The Indian gharial is critically endangered, with fewer than 1,000 remaining in the wild. Sign up by January 28 to save $10 on registration: https://lnkd.in/eDGk2RX5 #RunForTheWild

With partners and support, Wildlife Conservation Society, Nigeria Program has established conservation education clubs in over 100 local schools in communities around Cross River National Park, Afi Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary, the Mbe Mountains, and Yankari Game Reserve. ⬇️ #EnvironmentalEducationDay
It's Environmental Education Day! At the Wildlife Conservation Society, we believe that education is one of the keys to protecting our planet's precious wildlife and natural resources. At all of our 5 project sites we emphasize the importance of environmental education in promoting sustainable development, conserving biodiversity, and addressing climate change. With support from donors and partners, WCS has established conservation education clubs in over 100 local schools in communities around Cross River National Park, Afi Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary, the Mbe Mountains, and Yankari Game Reserve. These clubs help improve awareness on the importance of biodiversity as the foundation of our food, clean air, clean water, soil quality, and human well being. #EnvironmentalEducationDay #WildlifeConservation Federal Ministry of Environment, Nigeria WildAid Yankari Game Reserve Delegation of the European Union to Nigeria and ECOWAS Tusk Elephant Protection Initiative National Park Service, Nigeria

Shared governance increases marine protected area effectiveness, says a new paper co-authored by WCS’s Dr. Emily Darling. When government and nongovernment groups work together, MPAs are 98% more likely to net better conservation outcomes. Part of why we support communities worldwide to enhance their fisheries and conserve the coastal waters upon which we all depend.
