  • In the biopharma industry, innovation is usually synonymous with scientific advancement. In this latest episode of Converge Cast, Jason Hawbecker joins Michael Castleman and Ysette Witteveen to discuss new arenas of innovation focused on "meeting patients where they are—physically or digitally." As Biogen's Senior Vice President and Head of External Growth & Innovation, Hawbecker explains how Biogen is embracing digital technologies, new service models, ai, ai chatbots, and diverse partnerships to drive better awareness, access, engagement, onboarding, and adherence with patients and caregivers. "We're finally realizing we don't always have to compete. There are opportunities to drive revenue for everyone while improving patient outcomes," he says. Listen to their conversation: Drawing on his experience at CVS Health, Hawbecker highlights how collaboration across the healthcare ecosystem is essential. Whether a partnership with Optum to enhance care for women with postpartum depression or with Delta Airlines to improve travel for wheelchair-bound patients, Hawbecker notes that innovation needs intentionality and rethinking the status quo. "It’s about making life easier for patients," he says. "You can’t measure everything with ROI." • In a way, healthcare is experiencing post-traumatic stress from the COVID pandemic, believes Monique Butler, MD MBA, senior vice president and chief medical officer of HCA Healthcare North Florida Division. The industry must now pay more attention to building back the strength and resilience of nurses, physicians and other essential workers, as well as of leaders themselves. In this conversation with WittKieffer’s Linda Komnick, Dr. Butler describes efforts she and HCA have taken to instill resilience throughout the workforce. Her advice to leaders and working professionals, “Take care of yourself first.” The conversation also explores Dr. Butler’s transition from full-time practitioner to full-time executive and the rewards that has brought to her career. • Even the most experienced leaders can struggle to maintain a reliable reference list so that it’s ready when needed. "We get it," write Christy Pratt and Robert Springall in this new article. "Building and keeping a solid team of references . . . requires steady attention, even when you’re not actively looking for a new position. Identifying and reaching out to potential references often involves awkward conversations with people you’ve worked with in the past. The simple question 'Will you serve as a reference for me?' is fraught with complexity." Given these myriad considerations, their most essential piece of advice is to dedicate time and effort to contemplating, building, and maintaining references before they're needed. In this article, Christy and Rob offer recommendations for building and nurturing references – a mix of what to do as well as what not to do. • “You need to get comfortable being uncomfortable,” Gregory R. Johnson, MD, SFHM, FAAFP, FACP, Chief Medical Officer for UnityPoint Health, says about leadership. Through discomfort comes growth. Dr. Johnson’s career story is replete with occasions where he challenged himself and welcomed discomfort in order to learn and grow. In this Impactful Leaders Podcast episode with Vineeth (Vinny) Gossain, Dr. Johnson looks back on the reasons he got into medicine (“I was hooked” from an early age) and how he’s grown as a leader as a way of impacting ever-larger numbers of people. “Leadership is complicated,” he says, but it is more important than ever. • The CFO role is one of the toughest jobs in higher education, write Jen Meyers Pickard, Ph.D. and Melody Rose, NACD.DC, Ph.D. in a just-published article in Inside Higher Ed. The rigors of the role combined with the lack of clarity and authority within some institutions is cause for a reimaging, they say. "The CFO role needs an earnest re-evaluation and perhaps a makeover or a different title in some situations. We don’t pretend to have all the answers but would like to explore some of the challenges in greater depth, as well as present some suggestions for ways to help institutions reimagine the role of their current CFO and better prepare themselves to recruit their next one." Private equity (PE) markets continue to adapt to the new realities of a more restrictive funding environment, higher cost of capital, and fewer exit paths. "Value creation once again relies squarely on proven principles that are cyclically agnostic — organic growth and operational excellence," write Michael Castleman and Tjai M. Nielsen, Ph.D. in "Enhancing Value Creation Through Impactful Leadership." They continue: "Impactful leadership — which we define as the right people operating as a high-performing executive team and fostering an enterprise culture of constructive performance — drives the organic growth and operational excellence that create value. While we believe this to be a fundamental truth, it is starkly evident in challenging times." Michael and Tjai provide a playbook for PE-backed companies, especially those in the life sciences and healthcare sectors, to understand "how strategic objectives translate to business and talent needs, how to assess leaders against those specific needs, and how to find or develop leaders who can perform across an inevitably dynamic investment period." • Julie Lucas, VP of Resource Development at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, believes these two objectives have defined her work in advancement for more than 25 years. Results are critical, of course, and creating community, unity, and enthusiasm around an institution’s mission and vision are also imperative. In this conversation with Advancement Practice Leader Greg Duyck, Lucas shares the story of becoming inspired by the potential of advancement and development to make a difference in society. Today, Lucas has overseen and been part of some of the largest and most successful campaigns in higher education, including MIT’s recent Campaign for a Better World. Her success can also be traced to an interdisciplinary approach to fundraising, much like the traditional interdisciplinary framework of universities. “Everybody is working together” to generate the capital to keep the institution’s mission-critical activities going.
