Demand for geothermal energy production is growing across the United States as companies look towards reliable sources of clean, firm power. As a result, we’re seeing increased efforts from policy makers to address development challenges and expedite deployment of geothermal technology. Recently, the U.S. House of Representatives passed two bills focused on addressing some of the regulatory barriers to deploying geothermal energy, led by Representative John Curtis and Representative Michelle Steel with large bipartisan support. XGS is excited to see forward momentum on geothermal policies – these and other policies will ensure that the United States is well positioned to scale next-generation geothermal technologies from research and development to full-scale commercial integration across the nation’s electricity grids. Growing demand for electricity to power AI is fueling the deployment of novel forms of clean energy, including geothermal, helping to propel the energy transition. In a recent CBC article, Paula Duhatschek discusses how tech companies are making big investments in clean sources of energy like next-generation geothermal to meet their rapidly growing electricity needs while simultaneously maintaining their pledges to minimize fossil fuel-related emissions. XGS’s solid-state geothermal system is well positioned to meet this rapid expansion in electricity demand, delivering reliable, scalable clean energy around-the-clock, which can be deployed anywhere in the world. Last week, our CTO Axel-Pierre Bois attended the ARPA-E Geothermal Workshop on Enabling Transformative Technologies for Superhot Geothermal. Axel participated in a panel discussion on the critical technology advancements needed to unlock superhot geothermal, including advanced or alternative cement systems, high-temperature downhole tools, and improved drilling technologies. We’re honored to have had Axel represent XGS on the panel alongside industry peers from the University of Oklahoma, UltraDeep Energy Company, and HOTROCK ENERGY RESEARCH ORGANIZATION. XGS Energy is always happy to engage in practical discussions with other groups seeking to advance geothermal technologies; collaborative technology development will be key to realizing the full potential of superhot geothermal resources. #geothermalenergy #geothermal #cleanenergy #cleantech

Today, XGS Energy CCO Lucy Darago, Ph.D. attended the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace’s Workshop on U.S. Foreign Policy for Next-Generation Geothermal. The race for new power generation is heating up and if the U.S. hopes to jump ahead or even just keep up, now is the time to embrace energy innovation that can help achieve a net-zero world. According to Milo McBride’s recent Carnegie Endowment report, geothermal is one sector where the U.S. has the potential to pull ahead, based on its industrial advantages in drilling. New techniques that break down traditional barriers could expand national geothermal power generation potential 140-fold—roughly five times the nation’s entire installed power generation today. Next-generation approaches like XGS’ solid-state geothermal system have the potential to provide 24/7 clean power and over the long term, these systems will support decarbonizing the remainder of the power grid by offering flexibility to adjust output as needed alongside variable renewable energy sources. Geothermal energy has the potential to provide clean, round-the-clock power, in America and across the globe. The world is taking notice, as a recent study published by Stanford University affirms. The study focuses on policy recommendations that will sustain the economic transformation in Saudi Arabia that has been initiated by Vision 2030, and specifically highlights the potential of geothermal energy. The report cites Saudia Arabia’s existing expertise and capabilities in oil exploration and drilling, giving Saudia Arabia a competitive edge in developing its geothermal energy potential. Another driver for geothermal development in Saudi Arabia is its favorable geology, with the report citing “significant geothermal (baseload) resources along the Red Sea coast, with ‘very high favorability’ resources stretching from the Gulf of Aqaba in the north down to Abha in the south.” We’re encouraged to see geothermal becoming a top priority for a diversified energy portfolio, driven by the value of transferrable skillsets.
