Safe. Supported. Celebrated

About us

Established in 1998, Youth Outlook is Illinois’ first and longest-running nonprofit social services agency solely dedicated to supporting LGBTQ+ youth. We offer services that impact the whole of the LGBTQ+ youth experience – self, home, school, and community. We work across Illinois, offering virtual and in-person drop-in centers for youth ages 12-20, age-appropriate programming for LGBTQ+ children in grades K-6, caregiver and parent support, community education, and professional development. The need for these services has never been more urgent. National research indicates that LGBTQ+ youth are coming out at an average age of 13, down from 19 about a decade ago, opening them up to victimization and rejection they are not equipped to handle and putting them at risk for poor mental health outcomes. We invite you to join us in helping LGBTQ+ youth feel safe, supported, and celebrated!

Get ready for another edition of our #TGDWellness series in partnership with Illinois Department of Human Services and Public Health Institute of Metropolitan Chicago! Besides “putting a rainbow on it”, queer and trans people need more from their healthcare providers to feel safe and included. Tonight, we're highlighting a few different methods you can use to make your practice a more welcoming space. For example, if you need to explain why you are unable to offer gender neutral restrooms, you can say something like, "We don’t have full control over our facilities here. There are gendered multi-stall restrooms in the hallway. Please use whichever is most comfortable for you and let our staff know if you need someone to accompany you." Read on for the rest of our tips, and feel free to ask questions or even share some tips of your own down in the comments! #GenderAffirmingCare #TransHealthcare #TheFutureIsInclusive

We are continuing our Dare to Dream Award Winner features with our Excellence in Service Award, which this year goes out to Matt Appleman! Matt Appleman is a force. He is always happy and his laugh is infectious! When PFLAG Sauk Valley started talking about doing something to support youth in our community, Matt was on the board, and he was a strong Youth Outlook advocate. He, along with the other board members, donated $20 a month (each) to get Youth Outlook's down payment together, and he was one of a handful who got trained to be a volunteer for our pilot test program in October 2011 and thus is among the very first volunteers for the Sterling location. In addition to his valuable time, he has invested supplies and ingredients for his popular Pizza Making Night activity. He purchased several giant blow up 'hamster balls' for our shared use with a recovery group that he started. They reside at our group and the kids love them when we pull them out. Matt has been a rock for as long as the Sterling site has been running. He is always willing to help out our community in whatever capacity he can. His salon, Rogue Salon, gets lots of local foot traffic, and he posts fliers about Youth Outlook’s programs, so kids going by know they are supported. He always is on the lookout for youth who might need Youth Outlook, and makes sure the info is available. Dixon youth that find him know his business is a safe place if/when needed. When asked about Matt Appleman, our youth said “he unlocks our joy” and described him as “who I want to be when I grow up”, among many other glowing accolades about his style, wit, and reliability. Thank you, Matt, for your years of commitment to ensuring LGBTQ+ youth in Sterling and beyond know that they are, and will always be, Safe, Supported, and Celebrated. Congratulations on earning this honor! #PeaceLoveDareToDream #DareToDream2024 #RainbowRevolution

The invitations for this year's Dare to Dream Gala are hot off the presses, so it is time to start announcing some of our award winners! Our Business Partner of the Year is Kristen Panice and her marketing company, Cake or Death Marketing Communications. Kristen joined the board of directors in 2022, serving as the Chair of the Marketing Committee and a member of the Training Taskforce, Fundraising, and Personnel Committees. She has led Youth Outlook through dozens of projects and strategic sessions cumulating hundreds of hours of dedication. We regularly talk about how true allies need to be ready to un-learn and to listen. She has listened to our varying points of view, taken all the notes and come back with versions that made it clear people were seen and heard. All of our educational, fundraising, and outreach materials have been and are touched with Kristen's love. Thank you, Kristen, for your years of dedication to our organization, and congratulations on earning this award!

Youth Outlook is excited to introduce a new social media series as part of our participation in the Transgender and Gender Diverse (TGD) Wellness and Equity Program funded by the Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS) and the Public Health Institute of Metropolitan Chicago (PHIMC): our Health and Wellness navigators have been hard at work compiling tips, tricks, stats, and providers to feature to help our followers better explore the often confusing world of gender affirming healthcare. We're kicking things off by sharing a few easy steps patients can take to find affirming healthcare professionals.
