Director, Trade & Distribution

SUMMARY: The Director, Trade & Distribution will play a critical role in the growth of Ionis and its transformation into a fully integrated biotechnology organization, by leading the key U.S Commercial Distribution activities for Ionis’ innovative products. This individual will be responsible for developing the strategy for, and driving implementation of, distribution channel solutions that optimize patient access for Ionis’ launch products. This position will report to the Executive Director; Trade and Distribution and may be located at our corporate headquarters in Carlsbad California, our Boston office location or remote.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the overall tactical execution of the Channel and Distribution Strategy. This may include the development and refinement of scalable distribution strategies focused on short and long term corporate goals, expansion or contraction of network partners, class of trade focused initiatives, and other strategy as endorsed by commercial and executive leadership teams
  • Lead the required Contracting, Onboarding, and Integration with any new distribution partners-including, but not limited to Specialty Distributors and Specialty Pharmacies necessary to support Ionis’ wholly owned asset portfolio
  • Establish appropriate vendor service requirements, monitor relevant performance metrics while considering the overall financial impact to Ionis. In addition, lead all aspects of day to day monitoring and management of performance vs established service level agreements with all contracted distribution partners
  • Coordinate with Supply Chain, Patient Services, Finance, Commercial Insights and Analytics in demand forecasting and pharmacy and or specialty distribution fulfillment throughout pre-launch and post-launch phases of product to ensure successful implementation of the Trade & Distribution strategy
  • Develop and manage Trade & Distribution budgets in line with the financial and strategic goals through efficient management of vendor partners and contractors
  • Provide leadership with the necessary Ionis intercompany cross functional teams by maintaining a deep understanding of the distribution, specialty pharmacy, and industry trade channels
  • Collaborate with other Market Access colleagues, all Commercial Brand Teams, Supply Chain and Manufacturing, Finance, IT, Legal, Compliance and other corporate leadership teams on new to market brand launches and execution of distribution strategy
  • Monitor and resolve all day-to-day operational issues between the various channel partners to ensure a high level of exceptional service is offered through the various Ionis operating models
  • Partner with Patient Services, Commercial Analytics, IT and vendor partners to develop a full suite of data analytics that will ensure relevant and timely data is captured and reported to support the various Ionis field and executive leadership teams
  • Responsible for the development of all relevant communications to the distribution channel customers that will ensure successful communication of all product related information (US Compendia notifications, Pricing Actions, Product Expiry notices, etc.)
  • Represent Ionis Pharmaceuticals at relevant industry and trade organizations meetings as assigned
  • Comfort in communicating effectively with Executive Leadership, Brand Leadership, and Cross functional leaders is essential

Requirements

  • Undergraduate bachelor’s degree required, ideally in health sciences or business/marketing; MBA or other advanced degree preferred
  • Bio/pharmaceutical experience with at least 15+ years in commercial market access, trade, and/or distribution related functions
  • Current experience negotiating and implementing complex contracts with Specialty Distributors/Wholesalers and Specialty Pharmacies is required
  • Successful new to market launch experience in the US in the Rare disease, orphan, or ultra-orphan product market is required
  • Strong understanding of US pharmaceutical supply chain and relevant experience with distribution models, medical and pharmacy benefit dollar flows, trade processes, state licensing requirements is required. This would include in-depth knowledge of drug distribution channels including hospital, GPO’s, specialty distribution and specialty pharmacy, and government programs, such as 340B, State Medicaid, Medicare Part D
  • Demonstrated skills in data analytics, business planning, negotiations, financial acumen, contract pull-through, and problem-solving
  • Understanding of regulatory agency requirements or policies that govern drug distribution
  • Strong leadership skills and ability to partner / effectively collaborate across functions to gain alignment and improve business performance
  • Demonstrated ability and proven history of driving execution
  • Highly organized and detail oriented, with strong presentation and writing skills, proactive communications

The pay scale for this position is $180,000 to $240,000
