Engineering Manager
I. Position Description
Directs, coordinates and exercises functional authority for planning, organizing, controlling, integrating, managing, and completing engineering projects throughout the plant, including managing the activities of the engineering staff at the facility. Reports to Director of Maintenance and Engineering.
Ii. Primary Duties And Responsibilities
Comply with all environmental, health, safety and housekeeping programs.
Plan and formulate engineering projects program and organize engineering staff according to project requirements.
Develop, design and submit assigned projects for approval; manage approved projects; assist engineers with same.
Supervise engineering staff, assigning work to and monitoring performance of engineers.
Provide engineering input into new projects requested for development, including process improvements requested by operations.
Review project design for compliance with engineering principles, company standards, internal customer requirements, customer contract requirements and related specifications.
Evaluate and approve design changes, specifications and drawing releases.
Minimize costs associated with introduction of new technology to the plant while complying with all safety and environmental standards as well as capital budget limitations.
Confer with management and production staff to discuss project specifications, design, implementation and procedures.
Assist plant management in developing annual capital budgets and spending plans.
Prepares interim and completion project reports.
Create, maintain and present weekly project update reports.
Conduct Pre-Startup Safety Reviews for completed projects.
Prepare and/or update procedures and work instructions for new equipment/processes.
Assist with troubleshooting process problems and identify engineering solutions which reduce downtime and conserve maintenance costs.
Other duties as assigned.
Iii. Pre-hire Requirements
Excellent oral and written communication skills (English).
Proficiency in Office software (Word, Excel, etc).
BSME, BSCHE, BSEE, BSIE or equivalent experience.
7+ years hands-on experience in heavy manufacturing industry, mechanical systems troubleshooting, design, fabrication, manufacturing, installation and operations.
Two to three years supervisory experience.
AutoCAD/Solidworks experience.
Additional experience desired: Metals recovery, smelting and converting; ferrous and non-ferrous metals selection and application; high temperature refractory and metals selection and application; large capacity air/gas/02 fired furnaces; CMMS and EAM application, implementation and utilization; SCAQMD, OSHA, NIOSH, Industrial Ventilation requirements, permitting, standards and regulations; ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 50001, & OHSAS 18000 awareness.
Iv. Post-hire Training Requirements
Safety training (including OHSAS 18001 and for applicable equipment)
Environmental Management System (ISO 14001) awareness, including plant EMS objectives and targets, and significant environmental aspects and impacts
Quality Management System (ISO 9001) and ISO 50001 Energy Management Standard familiarization
Ecobat Business System (EBS) lean manufacturing initiative
Auditing for ISO systems
Operations equipment, systems and processes
Job instructional training as deemed necessary
V. Physical Requirements And Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and is regularly exposed to toxic, acidic or caustic chemicals and risk of electrical shock. The employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate with occasional exposure to high noise levels. Must be able to wear required Personal Protective Equipment.
