About the Role:

The Exploration & Development - New Ventures team is seeking to hire a Principal Geophysicist with strong experience in subsurface evaluation ranging from play analysis to prospect maturation. This role is based in Houston, TX.


As a member of the New Ventures team, you will be responsible for generating play and prospect assessments and recommending opportunities for capture. The work will focus on the ability to integrate all elements of the petroleum system, working from the plate scale to the prospect scale. Emphasis will be placed on a well-rounded candidate capable of completing their own interpretations as well as guiding and integrating petroleum system elements and geophysical analysis for consistent volume and risk evaluation.


The New Ventures team sits within the Exploration and Development division in Woodside Energy. Exploration and Development’s mandate is to capture/characterize/mature oil and gas opportunities, frame and execute resource appraisal plans that reduce resource uncertainty and identify the preferred development concept.


Skills & Experience:

The successful candidate should have the following qualifications/attributes:


  • A proven professional with 7+ years of experience working as an exploration or appraisal geoscientist. Preference for the ability to generate and integrate amplitude-based exploration workflows into play evaluation and prospect maturation.
  • Demonstrated ability to work from plate to prospect scale; integrating structural, stratigraphic, geochemical, and geophysical data to describe basin evolution and generate play maps.
  • Strong seismic interpretation skills.
  • Proficiency in seismic interpretation software such as Petrel or DSG.
  • Well-grounded in concepts of play and prospect risk and volumetric assessments.
  • Skilled application of GeoX software for volumetric modelling.
  • Working knowledge across many different basins and tectonic settings is preferred.
  • Possess the commercial acumen to be able to justify recommendations on data purchases, farm-in opportunities, and bid round participation.
  • Track record of successfully capturing exploration licenses and/or prospects that have resulted in commercial success. Experience maturing and drilling captured opportunities is a plus.
  • Has the ability to work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team in a fast-paced, challenging environment, and across organization.
  • Provide mentorship and coaching to less experienced team members.
  • Developed communication skills to exchange complex information.
