HJF is seeking a Research Assistant I to perform research and/or development in collaboration with others for projects. The Research Assistant provides laboratory and technical support to senior technical and professional staff and solves less complex problems in carrying out research project. This position wil be in a clinical setting, flexibility in work hours may be necessary at times in order to accommodate research participant schedule limitations, though for the most part regular business hours are anticipated.

This position will be in support of Dr. Michael Roy at USUHS, Dept of Medicine and Walter Reed Military Medical Center. This research is focused on improving the treatment of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and related conditions such as Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). The RA will be primarily responsible for patient recruitment at Department of Defense and Veterans’ Affairs facilities, as well as through veterans’ organizations and at civilian locations such as community hospitals. The RA will also be involved with tasks such as participant enrollment and tracking throughout the course of the study, data collection, assistance in preparation of documents for IRBs and other regulatory bodies, preparation and presentation of abstracts at professional meetings, and the writing of manuscripts for publication in scientific journals.

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Since its founding in 1983, HJF has served as a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners. HJF's support and administrative capabilities allow military medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.

Responsibilities

  • Performs research projects, including the collection and organization of data. Follows instructions and standard operating procedures.
  • Performs data entry in accurate, timely, and efficient manner. Maintains clear and accurate data collection records and inventories in accordance with Good Clinical and/or Good Laboratory practices.
  • Conducts recruitment outreach at military treatment facilities (MTFs) and veteran and civilian locations to be determined by study team. Recruitment responsibilities include but are not limited to: dissemination of advertisements for the recruitment of participants in clinical trials and help in speaking to relevant professional groups and community or patient advocacy organizations in order to promote interest in, and referrals to, active clinical trials. Creativity in outreach efforts is highly desirable, and is likely to include creation of advertisements and social media posts.
  • Maintains weekly/monthly status reports on all recruitment efforts and participants and disseminates recruiting and enrollment reports.
  • Coordinates and communicates clearly with study participants and appropriate members of the research team before, during, and after data collection to ensure smooth conduct of study procedures.
  • Establish sufficient familiarity with research protocols through reading, training, and practice, in order to be able to accurately and consistently following detailed research protocols.
  • Managing participant enrollment and tracking of participant status throughout involvement in study.
  • Administer pre- and post-intervention questionnaires and ensure completion of assessments according to protocol timeframes.
  • After requisite training, may be asked to consent participants for approved clinical research protocols, and to educate them regarding study procedures.
  • Record, enter, and assist with the analysis of clinical data.
  • Assist in the preparation of documents for submission to relevant IRBs for approvals, continuing reviews, and protocol amendments and deviations
  • Work with the PI and other study staff on the writing of abstracts for scientific meetings, and corresponding papers for publication in journals.
  • Adheres to legal, professional and ethical codes with respect to confidentiality and privacy.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Minimum of 0-2 years experience required

Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.

Note: This work site requires that Non-US Citizen incumbents have lived in the US three out of the past five years.

Some positions or sites may require that the incumbent be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Proof of vaccination may be required.
