I'm delighted to be giving a 40 minute lecture on #rewilding to students at the Manchester School of Architecture (MSA) this afternoon. There's so much to say about dispersal, diversity and disturbance that I found enough material to go for much longer than this and had to be quite selective in my approach.
I'm tackling the topic using the 3 D's model as it's an easy way to understand the complex natural systems which underpin a healthy functioning ecosystem. But I've been able to break these down into more detail than ever before for this lecture.
I'll be revising the script for a wider audience and recording it as a video for Life to Land, where it will form part of the useful reference materials which landowners can draw on when working towards a greater understanding of their land.
Thanks to Sandeep B. Menon for offering me this opportunity - I'm really looking forward to sharing my enthusiasm for the topic with these students. While rewilding is typically thought of as a landscape-scale process, our urban landscape is made of many smaller units. By following a similar, networked strategy across the urban landscape, we can have far more impact on urban #biodiversity.
There are of course challenges to this environment, like the issue of integrating herbivores into smaller projects, but I'll be addressing this issue in the talk. We can replicate some of their activity by hand, and some herbivores may be possible to accommodate in semi urban settings.
I'm also looking forward to hearing from the students about their response to rewilding. It's always valuable to get feedback and questions that make you think deeper about a topic.

NEWS 🗞 🏘 CSA are pleased to announce that the Inspectorate has allowed Gladman’s appeal for up to 160 homes at land north of Station Road, Stalbridge.
CSA Environmental were originally instructed to provide heritage, landscape, ecology and masterplanning services to inform an outline planning application. The outline application was subsequently refused by Dorset Council, with reasons for refusal including matters of design and heritage impact.
CSA's Rob Rasberry (Urban Design) and Rosey Meara (Heritage) appeared at the Hearing. On design and heritage matters, the Inspector found that as an outline planning application there was sufficient scope to address detailed design issues at the reserved matters stage in relation to providing acceptable living conditions and making a positive response to the character and appearance of the area, including the setting of a Grade II* listed building.
The development, will provide 40% affordable homes, secure net gains in biodiversity alongside the provision of new areas of publicly accessible open space and green infrastructure. The development was also designed to accommodate 2ha of land for a new primary school.

Insightful commentary on how to approach engagement with Traditional Owners to create sustainable outcomes. It’s about listening, connecting, and learning.
“𝘐𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦’𝘴 𝘯𝘰 𝘸𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳, 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦’𝘴 𝘯𝘰 𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦.” Russell Reid, Senior Aboriginal Affairs and Participation Consultant and Gamilaraay man, puts it in stark and simple terms. Dig deeper though, and we can find many more valuable lessons to learn from Country in managing our water resources for a sustainable and resilient future.

Conservation areas.....
Like buses, sometimes similar projects come along...
This week I've been investigating the impact of new-build proposals upon the historic significance of adjcent conservation areas. In one case, not very adjacent!
As was apparent with the M&S HQ Oxford Street proposal, poured over in the High Court in February this year, a property doesn't have to be in a conservation area to need a heritage statement and impact assessment to consider the impact your proposals may have upon 'special character'.
However, unless you engage in a pre-app process, this expectation from the local council may not be apparent until the full application is lodged.
To mitigate this, would you commission a heritage statement and impact assessment pre-emptively? Does this therefore suggest the pre-app process is becoming a necessary risk-mitigation measure?

📌🏠 Residential Development, Darlington
Our Environmental engineers have been onsite at a residential development conducting desiccation testing to evaluate the potential for soil heave.
Surrounding vegetation has been removed to allow space for the development. Therefore, it is vital soil heave is investigated to prevent structural damage to housing foundations later down the line.
Once evaluated, structural engineers can then design appropriate foundations for the ground conditions.
