The journey for many B2B companies to transition from selling and marketing customized services to productized offerings can be a long and complex one. There are three reasons for this: 1. There’s a business model transformation, since you’re changing the way you deliver value to your customer base and generate revenue. 2. There’s a digital transformation, since you’re you’re investing in technology or AI to standardize the way you deliver value to your customers. 3. There’s a cultural transformation, since you have to take off your expert hat and put your learner’s hat on (especially when you’re collecting feedback from customers). When done the right way, productizing services can help a B2B company to scale faster, more effectively, and serve a greater number of clients. So how can B2B companies effectively sell and market productized services? Here are 5 key areas that need to be addressed: 1. Clearly define who the market segment is. 2. Understand how you’re going to monetize your product (Pricing and packaging). 3. Think about your marketing (Messaging, value proposition, and lead generation tactics). 4. Identify and understand which sales channels you’re going to focus on. 5. Understand how you’re going to make sure that the product is renewable. A quick B2B marketing lesson learnt from ... my dentist. They thought they were making money, but it backfired. At the end of the day: friction is still friction. It's not always easy to do, but amazing things happen when you eliminate it, not just reduce it. One way we're trying to get better at this is we took a B2B podcasting course (~35 modules) we were planning to sell and ungated it completely, you can check it out in the first comment.
