Staten Island, one of New York City's five boroughs, boasts a rich and diverse history. One fascinating chapter is its role during the American Revolutionary War. Known as the "Forgotten Borough," Staten Island was strategically important due to its location near the entrance to New York Harbor. In the early stages of the war, British forces recognized the island's value and swiftly occupied it in 1776. This occupation provided a secure base for the British, from which they could launch operations into New Jersey and Manhattan. The presence of British troops also influenced local loyalties—many Staten Islanders were loyalists who supported the British cause, which led to internal conflict and strife among the residents. The island was the site of a notable peace conference in September 1776, held at the Billopp House (now known as the Conference House). Here, American delegates including Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and Edward Rutledge met with British Admiral Lord Howe in an unsuccessful attempt to negotiate peace before the escalation of the war. Despite these historic events, Staten Island's role in the war is less commemorated compared to other New York City sites, preserving its title as the "Forgotten Borough." Today, the Conference House remains a museum, standing as a testament to this crucial but overlooked piece of American history. #history #historybuff #nyc #ny #statenisland #authorsoflinkedin #writersoflinkedin

The Heart of America: A Daughter's Reflection on D-Day's 80th Anniversary Today, as we commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day, the ceremony in Normandy serves as a powerful reminder of our national identity and the sacrifices made for our freedom. Watching President Joe Biden, representing every American, stand alongside the heroes of that fateful day, I am moved by the enduring spirit and unwavering patriotism that define America. Reflecting on my father, a proud US Navy veteran of World War II, I am reminded that true patriotism transcends political affiliations. His love for family and country and his unwavering dedication to service embody the American spirit of resilience and dedication. As we honor those who sacrificed everything for democracy, let us remember the values that unite us: honor and decency. Let us recommit to the principles that define our great nation and ensure that the sacrifices of those who fought for our freedoms were not in vain. In this hour of reflection, let us embrace America's true essence and uphold its legacy of courage, unity, and love of country. Let us reject those who attempt to divide us or use words like retribution to describe a future none of us would choose. Anything less would be a betrayal to those who stood the watch for us and to future generations. "The price of unchecked tyranny is the blood of the young and the brave. In their generation, in their hour of trial, the Allied forces of D-Day did their duty. Now the question for us is: In our hour of trial, will we do ours?" Memorial Day: Cultural Icon We the people are united by a common culture, one for which brave citizens fight and die. Culture is purposeful and must be nurtured - this is true for businesses, for communities, and for our nation. Memorial Day is this: a uniting nurturing of our national culture, a communal honoring of those who have given their lives that our culture and values might endure. This culture and these values are enshrined in our Constitution, the guiding principles for this the greatest of nations. On Memorial Day you might visit a cemetery or local graveyard and contemplate how you - yes you - could nurture our culture. I'd imagine that if we each work to nurture our ever-evolving culture we might be more united as a people. Wouldn't this be wonderful? Please say thank you to each flag-decorated grave marker you see. -George PS: what's in a name? A burial ground is a generic term often applied to unorganized fields of graves. A 'graveyard' is organized, as we have near churches and synagogues. 'Cemetery 'is based on the Ancient Greek for 'sleeping place' and is properly used to designate ground dedicated to a particular group, for example as the Arlington National Cemetery is for our military.

The survival of liberty in our land increasingly depends on the success of liberty in other lands. The best hope for peace in our world is the expansion of freedom in all the world.

Happy #MonarchMonday! Some states are starting to see caterpillars, so it’s a perfect time for a caterpillar identification refresh! Monarch caterpillars have a few look-alikes, making it more difficult to identify different species. Pictured are a black swallowtail caterpillar, a queen caterpillar, and a monarch caterpillar. An easy way to tell a queen and monarch apart is by the number of filaments. Monarchs have two sets, whereas queens have three. To differentiate between black swallowtails and monarchs, note the dots in the black swallowtail’s pattern versus the stripes of monarchs. What are your go-to ways of identifying caterpillars? #Monarch #MonarchButterfly #monarchcaterpillar #MorethanMonarchs #monarchhabitat #pollinatorhabitat #gardenformonarchs #Pollinators #Insects #PlantNative #PlantDiverse #PlantMilkweed #insectidentification
