Happy Times Linkediners, This past summer I had the privilege of joining Phoenix Charter Academy in Chelsea and I can’t express in full detail the great work this school has been doing since it was opened in 2006. As I see it, this school is about hope, inclusion, empowerment, global citizenship, social cohesion, common good, the eradication of suffering, exclusion, and loss. The school’s outcomes and impacts speak volumes. The school has been creating a soft but “radical” change through making secondary school education accessible. Not only this, but also the transition to either economically empowering jobs right after graduation, or to the pursuit of higher education in universities—for which Massachusetts has a universal renown— such as Brandeis, Northeastern, BU, or Bunker Hill. The school serves as a welcoming warm nest for new newcomers who, or whose parents, believe deeply in the American Dream and values. Being new to the USA, in general, and to Chelsea climate, in particular, makes these students and their families undergo a tsunami of challenges that only financial and social/emotional care can address, especially as the cold season is approaching rapidly. If you want to join a group of change makers, who strongly believe that what matters most are books, not bombs, and light of knowledge, not darkness of ignorance, consider supporting the scholars of Phoenix Charter Academy Chelsea. Change starts from here: https: https://gofund.me/f4d93ec4

HOW IS CAMDEN’S INNOVATIVE SCHOOL SYSTEM MOVING THE NEEDLE FOR NEW JERSEY STUDENTS? “Amid all the bad news in the post-pandemic public education sphere, there is a bright spot in a surprising city, Camden, New Jersey. There, students, while suffering steep learning losses so common in low-income districts, are finding their way forward through the collaboration of three different public school sectors: district, charter, and an unusual hybrid called “renaissance schools.” These renaissance schools, authorized by a law that let Camden approve partnerships with high-performing, nonprofit charter school networks willing to take on the lowest-performing schools, are driving the city’s learning gains. As such, the story of Camden’s “comeback,” described in a new report by Camden Education Fund, provides a blueprint for an innovative model of public education, not just in New Jersey but throughout the country.” Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gNxe-PTB #schooldistricts #education #renaissanceschools

https://lnkd.in/eMtV9TtY Many of Pennsylvania's community colleges continue to take costly measures to prevent the delay in state funding from impacting students and employees, including drawing on limited reserves or expensive lines of credit. But time will run out. Community colleges remain the only public higher education institutions in Pennsylvania still awaiting funds authorized in the state's 2023-24 budget.-- funds that over 245,000 students are counting on for their education. Many organizations aiming to improve the lives of young people understand intuitively the value of including young people themselves in organizational governance. But what exactly does that--or could that--look like? At the Kentucky Student Voice Team, a youth-led non-profit that ascribes to co-designed, co-generational decision making to ensure more just, democratic schools, we are constantly experimenting with the concept. What it looks like right now, as envisioned by our community and as realized at our most recent in-person and virtual convening over the weekend includes a board comprising 25 people, 13 of whom are currently Kentucky high school students, another 10 of whom are under the age of 22, and all of whom are charged with questioning and approving virtually every significant financial, operational, and programmatic decision we make. On a more visceral level though, it looks like the screen shot of our board meeting below. You don't even have to look too closely to see the joy that radiates from people who are committed to learning as they go and who, among many other things, are proving to themselves and the world that maybe board meetings that draw on lived experience as well as expert knowledge need not be so boring after all.

In our latest episode of Future U, we had an insightful discussion on the role and future of legacy admissions in higher education. Legacy admissions has come under scrutiny recently due in part to the Supreme Court's ruling on affirmative action. But there are reasons universities like legacy admissions. One of the arguments supporting legacy admissions is that the practice could theoretically support low-income students by fostering loyalty and boosting fundraising, thus potentially contributing more financial aid for those in need. Proponents further claim that the presence of legacy students could bring certain advantages to an institution in that it fosters a uniform culture and connects students across generations. But there are new studies like the one from Raj Chetty that claim legacy admissions overly helps wealthy, White applicants. And, there are examples like Johns Hopkins, which ceased legacy admissions without seeing a drop in donations. This is a complex issue with no easy answers. But, as Jeff Selingo points out in the episode, schools are most likely not going to get rid of it without intervention from state or federal government. This is a conversation worth having as we strive for greater equity in education. This episode was made with support from Ascendium's Education Philanthropy and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. #HigherEducation #LegacyAdmissions #DiversityInEducation #AffirmativeAction
