A really important piece to ensure health tech doesn't giveth and takeaway. The NHS commitment to net zero amongst it's suppliers does give rise to challenges for health tech companies who need to ensure that in order to keep having a positive impact on peoples' health they're not having a negative impact on the planets' health.

We all know that collaboration is essential to better healthcare — considering the myriad of challenges faced by providers and suppliers, it's crystal clear that the only way forward is together. And nowhere is that truer than in the sustainability realm. It's an oft-cited statistic, largely because it's a stunning one: The U.S. healthcare system contributes 10% of the nation's carbon emissions and 9% of harmful non-greenhouse air pollutants. Sustainability - Small Steps, Big Impact! Starting a sustainability journey can feel overwhelming, especially for smaller companies. Whilst addressing the Net Zero requirement is important, it rarely gets to the top of an organisations agenda. Limited resources, tight budgets, and packed schedules also often become roadblocks. These insights come from our panel discussion hosted by our Sustainability Lead Rich Shaw at the recent Med-Tech Innovation where Addie MacGregor of ABHI and Richard Cohen of Pennine Healthcare shared their insights. The potential for decarbonization in this sector is immense, especially considering the significant contribution of product supply chains to CO2 emissions. Embracing sustainability in procurement can propel the healthcare industry towards a net-zero future while fostering innovation.

As the healthcare industry grapples with its environmental impact, the call to decarbonize grows ever louder. Amidst this urgency, supply chain collaboration emerges as a linchpin in our sustainability journey. Across the healthcare landscape, stakeholders are embracing a paradigm shift, recognizing that sustainability isn't just a buzzword—it's a moral imperative. From boardrooms to operating rooms, there's a growing consensus that our actions today will shape the health of future generations. It's with this sense of purpose that stakeholders are coming together, united in their commitment to drive change. In the realm of supply chain collaboration, partnerships are proving transformative. Prevention of illness is the lowest carbon way to avoid high carbon healthcare 1. Creating safe inclusive walking, cycling and public transport everywhere and for everyone. 2. Avoiding creating pollution from transport, cars, planes etc 3. Stopping pesticides and weedkiller contaminating soil, food, water and the environment 4. Creating an equal, inclusive society where good quality nutritious food, housing and access to services and community are a given. 5. Avoiding plastic air, water and soil pollution

Despite this our sector was at the risk of being ‘landed’ with ESG measures that were agnostic and not fit for purpose for healthcare. Then along came the Geneva Sustainability Centre who, through a global participation pilot and co design, have developed the Sustainability Accelerator Tool. It doesn’t matter where you are in your journey or if you are just getting started as the tool begins with a 56 question Maturity Assessment.  Multi-site hospitals can aggregate their data to assist to understand trends, strategize funding and priorities. So, whether you are digitizing medical leaflets, reducing food waste or switching to an EV fleet, there are a huge range of strategies that can be deployed, especially if we learn from each other and share practices to accelerate our collective progress. The tool is data informed and helps to underpin the reporting we will all need to do over time and ensuring trackability.
