#S4x24 notes 2: Asset Owners as the Last Mile of Cybersecurity by Matt Tompkins, FERC This talk compared the OT asset owners problems to the last mile problem in transportation logistics. There with the containers most of the transportation path was standardized and made cheap, except the last mile where the goods have to be transported to the end customer. However new innovation is starting to solve that in logistics. The presentation mostly discussed the problems and difficulties that asset owners have and called for action to start innovating to solve the cybersecurity last mile problem. However it did not provide any solutions. One interesting takeaway was that there is a European Repository of Cyber Incidents, which I will have to check out.

The triple threat of the threat actor (cyber criminal) can be expressed as: - “steal” - “conceal” - “reveal” That is, cyber extortion by exfiltrating, encrypting, and/or exposing sensitive business critical data. Today we see the ascendency of a fourth threat, “weild”. Herein, nation state and cyber criminals take control of equipment, vehicles, and “things” in the IoT — weilding them to cause great physical damage. At Arete, we strive everyday 24/7 to restore victims and end cybercrime. Joe Mann Annemarie Cyboron Geoff Brown Evelyn Minnick Raj Sivaraju Kevin Enders

Businesses worldwide are grappling with severe IT disruptions following a faulty software update from cybersecurity firm Crowdstrike. The update, intended for Falcon Sensor security products, caused thousands of Windows-based systems to crash, displaying the dreaded "blue screen of death" (BSOD). This has led to widespread issues affecting airports, financial services, and more. Crowdstrike is actively working to roll back the update, but the fallout has already impacted airports in Asia and Europe, disrupting flights and causing significant delays for travelers. Major airlines like Delta, United, and American have grounded flights due to technical issues. In response, Crowdstrike CEO George Kurtz assured that the issue isn't a security breach but a technical defect. The company has deployed a fix and continues to update affected customers through official channels. This incident underscores the vulnerabilities of our interconnected digital infrastructure. Experts are reflecting on the incident's implications for global IT resilience. Stay tuned for updates as the situation develops. . . . . #Crowdstrike #ITDisruption #Cybersecurity #TechNews #GlobalBusiness #Cryptostan #TheCryptoCountry

It is indeed alarming to witness such a massive IT outage caused by a faulty software update. While it's reassuring to hear that this incident is not a security breach or cyberattack, it highlights the importance of robust cybersecurity measures and diligent software testing. Preventing similar incidents requires a multi-faceted approach. Firstly, organizations must prioritize investing in comprehensive cybersecurity protocols and solutions. Ivo van Breukelen

Helping businesses understand, manage, and mitigate cyber risks. ♦Transportation, Trucking, Logistics ♦FTC Safeguards ♦HIPAA Compliance ♦
Transportation, trucking and logistics leaders! Sadly, we have another transportation company to add to the growing list of those hit by cyberattack. On March 3, 2024, a threat actor named Dragon Force cyber attacked Ward Transportation, claiming to have stolen a massive 574.14 gigabytes of data. This paralyzed multiple layers of Ward's network, halting their operations. It's a fact, cybercriminals are targeting transportation, and the consequences are significant. Imagine the impact on supply chains when operations grind to a halt. Unlike other sectors, it's not as easy to simply switch to pen and paper. Cybercriminals prey on your vulnerability, knowing you can't afford downtime. But you don't have to sit back and be a victim. At IT ArchiTeks, we specialize in defending transportation companies against all kinds of cyber-threats like ransomware and business email compromise. We've stood by our customers for over 20 years, defending them from every angle of an attack. You can count on us to be there for you too! Don't wait until it's too late.
