Highlighting the crucial role of local governments in preventing BEAD bottlenecks is key. Permitting standardization may not be universal, but building strong local partnerships is vital for boosting broadband take-rate. In rural areas, prioritizing broadband can lead to win-win outcomes for communities and ISPs. We have plenty of examples of this in Wisconsin. Silver Star Communications last week provided the Rexburg (Idaho) City Council with a closeout report on a two-year project to bring broadband to city residents and businesses. Austen Ackerschott has the story for the Rexburg Standard Journal. "The Silver Star project aims to provide a 'backbone [that] will serve as the base of the entire network and is designed for redundancy to the internet and doesn’t fail if fiber lines accidentally get cut,' the project overview says. 'The network is also being 'future-proofed' so that the infrastructure will be able to handle demand as we grow as a community.'" #broadbandforall #ruralbroadband #idaho #fiber #broadband #highspeedinternet #connectivity #digitaldivide #fiberbroadband #ruraldevelopment #fibernetwork #internet #infrastructure #internetaccess #criticalinfrastructure #construction #contractors #PCCA https://lnkd.in/e9D6Ma9V

good business move
Mears Broadband, LLC, a fiber network construction contractor, has launched as a standalone company just in time to support the flood of broadband deployment slated for later this year. For the last five years, Mears Broadband was a division of Mears Group, a subsidiary of Quanta Services that provides construction services for fiber broadband projects. In an interview with Fierce Telecom CEO Trent Edwards explained the untethering will allow Mears Broadband to make decisions without impacting the 13 other companies within Mears Group. “It’s allowed us to be agile, allowed us to have autonomy, be able to streamline decision making, address the market need in a very quick, efficient manner,” he said. https://lnkd.in/gcJNN6GP

Miami-Dade County is considering a $500 million agreement with Brightline to expand commuter rail services along the Florida East Coast Railway. The deal, set for discussion by county commissioners in the coming months, aims to fund the construction of the Northeast Corridor rail line. Brightline would establish six new stations: Downtown Miami, the Design District, Wynwood, Little Haiti, North Miami, and Ojus near Aventura. Future stations include Florida International University’s Biscayne Bay Campus and Turnberry’s SoLe Mia, and the Magic City Innovation District in Little Haiti. This project will be funded by federal, state, and local sources, including a significant federal grant proposed in President Biden’s 2025 budget. The expansion is part of a larger vision for a Tri-Rail Coastal Link that would extend from Miami to Jupiter. Brightline is also planning future expansions to Stuart, Disney World, and Tampa. Funding is one of the most pressing challenges when it comes to infrastructure. There’s a lot to build, a lot to maintain, and not a lot of money to do it all (relatively speaking). So here’s Geoff Cooper, General Manager of Strategy at the NZ Infrastructure Commission, talking about some key things to consider when it comes funding our infrastructure.

By taking some of the big picture items your #WesternMassEDC focuses on and convening small cohorts – our six subcommittees, we’ve learned key information, been able to responsively act, and prioritize based on feedback from these trusted individuals. This month it’s the Infrastructure Subcommittee Spotlight. The Infrastructure Committee acts as a catalyst and influencer to support infrastructure projects and focus areas that will help support regional economic opportunity, growth, and resilience. This group, led by Craig Reed, All States Materials Group, CFO, advocates for the continued development of roads, bridges, and additional infrastructure monies from the federal government with the intention to be inclusive of rural and urban regional development, such as broadband expansion and public transportation enhancements. #DrivingEconomicGrowth #EconomicGrowthStrategies #MassachusettsInfrastructure #EDC
