The offshore industry presents distinctive challenges in maintaining its stationary production assets. In this context, former accommodation units have transformed into a modern, high-end solution for operators, functioning as a  “floating shipyard” connected to the production units.   This marks a revolution on how operators manage maintenance, hook ups, and commissioning/decommissioning of the units, empowering them to refine their asset integrity strategy, and consequently enhance the safety of the operations.   Brazilian oilfield owner and operator, Petrobras, has even rebranded these units, referring to them as a MSU ( Maintenance and Safety Units), recognizing that labelling them as mere accommodation units no longer accurately reflects their capabilities.   As the new production units become more complex and with larger plants, the demand for preventive and corrective maintenance grows. The utilization of large capacity MSU’s, among other advantages, offer operators with:   - Significant savings on in logistics and the construction of temporary accommodation areas. - Flexibility for scopes, offering a variety of workshops, warehouses, office spaces and meetings rooms. Top 30 M&E contractors set for growth – ranking The country’s leading M&E contractors saw revenue rise by nearly a fifth last year driven mainly by cost inflation. But major firms are predicting a stronger year ahead as data centre work, commercial retrofits, life sciences and lab work starts to fire-up the sector. Relished my first coffee session with Ilyana, my new LinkedIn Connection on 6 Jan at Shah Alam. She holds a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering of UITM. Currently, she's an Engineer with GAMUDA for 3 years and 4 months.  Amongst her skills are : Quality Assurance Processes, Computer - Aided Design ( CAD), Construction,  Building Information Modelling ( BIM), Finite Element  Analysis ( FEA), SIDRA, EMME, C++. We deliberated the following topics : (1) Prospects of Civil Engineers in Oil & Gas Big Corporations a bit limited.  (2) In Petronas for instance, Civil Engineers may opt for Project Management, pursuing as a Technical Profesional.  (3) Prospects of Civil Engineers joining any of Oil & Gas Contractors prior to joining any of Oil & Gas Big Corporations.  (4) Prospects of Civil Engineers setting up a company and station in Malaysia or Middle  East.  (5) Leveraging on networking, who knows who.  (6) Inferiority, sceptism, reservation amongst some of local Graduates when facing Overseas Graduates.  (7) Work life balance - reality versus fantasies.  (8) Vast differences of working culture between Americans and Aseans.  (9) Disciplined, obedience, humbleness versus out spoken, rebellious, confrontation between Staff and Bosses - repercussions.  (10) Personal Financial Planning - acquiring physical assets like homes, liabilities, rat race, paycheck to paycheck, passive incomes, prudent budget frugal spending, financial freedom.  (11) Not to take things for granted, think for the worst scenarios.  (12) Salaries and benchmarks amongst Oil & Gas Big Corporations, MNC, Big Local Corporations and SME.  (13) English fluency.  Looking forward to meet again for our second coffee session in 2 months time.

Malaysia Oil & Gas Industry is booming again

This week, I found myself parking at a uniquely named location in Germany – the Bermuda Dreieck, or Bermuda Triangle. The irony wasn't lost on me, considering how often we discuss the Bermuda Triangle of engineering projects in our program, "Business Savvy Engineers". Just like the mysterious region in the western part of the North Atlantic Ocean, the Bermuda Dreieck parking lot had its own allure. You can drive in anytime, but it feels like you can never leave. This got me thinking about how similar it is to the challenges we face in engineering projects. In our program, we often refer to the Bermuda Triangle as a metaphor for the phase in projects where the margin seems to disappear mysteriously. It's that critical point where, without proper management and foresight, projects can veer off course, much like ships and planes lost in the actual Bermuda Triangle. The key to navigating this treacherous phase is a combination of business acumen, strategic planning, and technical expertise – the core pillars of "Business Savvy Engineers".
