The hot topic of conversation at the American Clean Power Association (ACP) siting and permitting conference this year was community engagement. Panel titles included phrases like "building bridges" and "being good neighbors." I'd like to share some key messages & best practices that I heard reiterated throughout the day: 1. Engage early! 2. Be collaborative – with communities, and also within the industry 3. Your work is not done if you gain social license to operate in a community, as you can easily lose it 4. Community engagement doesn’t end once a permit for a project is issued, it needs to continue on throughout the project lifecycle 5. Make sure you have collaborative dialog with county commissioners/local permitting stakeholders well in advance of applying for a permit, and ensure it’s ongoing 6. Do your homework, and get to know each community – they’re all different and have different needs 7. There are non-profits that are keen to help advance renewable energy, there are ways to collaborate with them and tap their resources 8. All politics is local What are your thoughts?

Community ownership of solar, energy storage, and other clean energy assets is among Groundswell's mission-centered goals - and the new IRS (thank you, IRA) "direct/elective pay" option for the solar tax credit is a powerful enabling policy. Last year, with support from the Wells Fargo Foundation, Groundswell kicked off the development of a new community ownership-centric project finance model that we have now demonstrated with the new City of Refuge, Baltimore Community Resiliency Hub. As John Moon, SVP and Sustainability Philanthropy Leader with Wells Fargo notes in the linked blog (below), "Upon completion, the City of Refuge resilience hub can serve as a real-world example that demonstrates the cost and savings so that similar transactions can be considered in other locations." Our project with City of Refuge demonstrates what's possible. In this New Year, it's all about replication and scale. https://lnkd.in/eFc32QGQ

From Jan 28 2019... "Community Wealth is all the monetary and non-monetary capital (relationships, respect, trust, environmental, energy, knowledge, etc.) that create the basis of shared experiences leading to wisdom, empathy and community. It is these capital elements which transform a neighborhood from a collection of individual families sharing a ZIP code to a real community in which every member understands the purpose of Community is to produce the individual and mutual wellbeing of all the participants, in an ongoing way." ~ Cornerstones of Community Wealth https://lnkd.in/gd5bfttr

Good Stewards are on the front lines when it comes to community outreach for our projects. We get to talk and build relationships with landowners, friends of the projects, and community stakeholders. However, this means that we also get to know those in opposition to the projects we work on. Listen to what Mariah has to say about her personal experience with opposition. #GoodStewardConsulting #RenewableEnergy #Challenges
