They'll give it a specific name and describe the process for providing assistance, creating a standardized method for attending to people's immediate needs. Once completed, the relief dashboard will appear on the community page. Here, people can state the type of aid they need, whether it's electricity, medical assistance, food, psychological support, housing, or water. Individuals can add themselves to the relief lists and access more information by clicking the info button. They can also locate safe zones, send distress calls, and report emergencies related to the disaster. Last weekend, flash flooding hit our area in Nova Scotia, reminding us of nature's unpredictable force during the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl. Growing up in Ontario, I underestimated the power of water. Witnessing roads washed out and the dangers posed to our community, our second home, was eye-opening. Tragically, mass flooding has claimed five lives in this area, since last year. Nova Scotia is facing unprecedented challenges with fires and floods. But it's not alone; similar climate-related issues are spreading across Canada and the US. Have we become desensitized to these disasters, accepting them as our new reality? It makes me question what the future holds 30 years from now if we don't prioritize preparedness and prevention. #ClimateChange #Prevention #Preparedness #NovaScotia

The American Red Cross has deployed staff and volunteers to prepare for Hurricane Beryl landfall in Texas in the next few days. My CAP teammates in Texas are partnering with 15 of their Partners to mobilize volunteers and support community response activities. They are ready to offer translation services, mass care related activities, and assist with recovery operations, providing a wide range of community services. In other states we are dealing with wildfires in California and Extreme Heat in CA, LA, MS, TN & AR. NOAA National Weather Service forecasters at the Climate Prediction Center predict above-normal hurricane activity in the Atlantic basin this year. Hurricane Beryl, the first hurricane of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, rapidly strengthened to a Category 5 storm unusually early in the year. This explosive strengthening was fueled in part by exceptionally warm ocean temperatures. That heat was one of the factors behind NOAA’s prediction in May of an 85% chance that the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season would be above normal. Beryl first formed as a tropical depression on June 28, 2024, with winds of 35 mph; within the first 24 hours, the storm rapidly intensified into a hurricane with winds of 75 mph. This was the farthest east that a hurricane has formed in the month of June. In the following 24 hours, Beryl underwent another instance of rapid intensification becoming an extremely dangerous Category 4 hurricane. At that point Beryl was the first Category 4 hurricane to form in the month of June. The previous record was Dennis when it became a Category 4 hurricane on July 8, 2005.
