Navigating the Paradox of Sustainable Aviation: The Little Airport That Could Sustainability and aviation might seem like a contradiction at first glance, especially when considering the carbon emissions associated with aviation fuel. It's a reality we can't ignore—right now, aviation isn't as green as we'd like it to be. But there's another side to this story that deserves attention. We are proud to be working with Christchurch Airport - who are not shying away from this significant challenge. Instead, they're using their considerable resources to invest in green infrastructure and sustainable processes that are setting new benchmarks in the industry. From harnessing renewable energy sources by enabling the development of a large solar farm onsite, to innovative heating technologies, to biodiversity targets, and implementing ruthless waste reduction strategies and procurement, they're making significant strides which pulls us all towards better outcomes. These initiatives are not just about mitigating impact but about leading the charge in what the future of aviation can and should look like. CIAL have a vision for a thriving, connected Aotearoa. And they are walking the talk when others have fallen silent. Yes, the road to sustainability in aviation is long and complex, but it's inspiring that this #Aotearoa #Airport is taking bold action, paving the way for a #greener tomorrow. This is something that #environmental advocates can be proud of—tangible progress on multiple fronts, even when the path is slick with greenwash. #Sustainability #GreenAviation #Innovation #NetZero

Veteran Aviation Journalist focussing on creating aviation/aerospace education ecosysystems connecting kids and parents to aviation and aerospace career opportunities
Most of what we read about #aviationsustainability concerns how long it will take to #decarbonize #aircraft. Too long, it turns out despite massive government investment in #sustainableaviationfuels #SAF. This is a great story of what else is going on at #airports. It focuses on Dubai Airports, Aeropuerto Ecológico de Galápagos which accommodates wildlife, except, of course on runways, Emirates repurposing interiors, All Nippon Airways, Thai Airways International sustainable uniforms, easyJet, Hawaiian Airlines Jonathan Hahn

📌#WEEK26 #TuesdayNews AVIATION SUSTAINABILITY NEWS 📰🗞️ ✈🌱 🔶️ Hawaiian Airlines donates life vests to become waterproof surf bags, helping surfers keep essentials safe.Think Blue Surf Bags from expired life vests are tested to IPX7 standards for waterproofing.Hawaiian Airlines has a strong track record of working with local companies on sustainability initiatives. 🔷️ The European Commission plans to exempt long-haul flights from new monitoring legislation for non-CO2 emissions. Non-CO2 emissions refer to various pollutants from burning jet fuel like water vapor, nitrogen oxides, and sulphur oxides. Airlines would need to track non-CO2 emissions and carbon dioxide emissions starting January 2025 in the EU, with exemptions for international routes which has caused controversy. 🔶️ Brazil | Embraer will now study Energia concepts for up to 50-seater aircraft based on airline feedback.Three propulsion options for these larger planes include hybrid-electric, pure hydrogen, and dual-fuel. Partnering with airlines is vital for Embraer to understand how the aircraft will be used in real operations. 🔷️ UK | Menzies Aviation, a leading ground handling service provider, has achieved a significant milestone in its sustainability efforts by securing approval for its net-zero targets from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). This approval validates Menzies' commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions across its entire value chain by 2045. This achievement places Menzies Aviation at the forefront of sustainability within the aviation services industry. They are the first major aviation services provider to receive SBTi approval for their net-zero goals. The SBTi is a respected organization that helps companies set ambitious emissions reduction targets aligned with climate science. 🔶️ #Kazakhstan is making strides toward sustainable aviation by exploring the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). 📰 Don't miss the Op-Ed from our Deputy Director General Julie Green published in the Portuguese media outlet Observador on Harnessing innovation to achieve net zero cruising: 🗣 "Long-term planning is underway for the implementation of a series of investments in green and sustainable technologies by the Port of Lisbon and the Lisbon Cruise Terminal, namely 37 million euros for the electrification of the Terminal, which will allow cruise ships docked at the port to be connected to shore power, and which is expected to be operational by 2026. This technology, introduced by the cruise industry more than 20 years ago, can significantly reduce emissions by allowing ships to switch off engines and plug into an onshore power source to maintain onboard services." 💡 These are tangible examples of how cruise travel is changing as part of an ongoing collective effort, which highlights a constant concern at global and local level regarding energy adaptation and the adjustment of the world fleet to achieve zero-emission sailing by 2050. 🗞 Follow the link to read the full article: https://lnkd.in/ehMRYHSe #Netzero #Wearecruise #sustainability
