The underemployment rate for young adults with disabilities is about 80%. These adults are so limited in the opportunities that are afforded to them, yet they have so much to offer the world if they are given a chance. The opportunity to work and earn a paycheck affords disabled adults the independence and feeling of accomplishment that we all crave. That's why bringing awareness to Disability Employment Awareness Month is so important in October, and all year round. We need to create a more inclusive and accessible world where disabled adults are given the chance to contribute. Where they can be seen, heard, and valued. And where they can participate in society, just like their non-disabled peers. Our mission as a nonprofit is to provide adults with disabilities meaningful, paid employment, and we know there are so many businesses and organizations out there doing similar work. This month, please support organizations like ours and help spread the word about why creating an inclusive workforce matters. If you're compelled to make a difference with us this month, we are grateful for donations of any amount that help further our mission. Thank you for championing inclusivity! https://lnkd.in/gFUcipJy #disabilityemployment #workplaceinclusion #supportnonprofits #inclusivitymatters #nonprofitorg

The Achieve Foundation’s Case for Philanthropy in Disability identifies that philanthropy has a huge opportunity to support the inclusion of people with disability. Commissioned by The Achieve Foundation in 2022 and developed by the Deloitte Access Economics, the report shows that in 2017-18, only 4.3% of philanthropic grant funding was allocated for people with disability, despite approximately 18% of the population having a disability. While the NDIS has provided much needed supports, it only supports about 12% of people with disability in Australia. The need is real and philanthropy has an opportunity to lead the charge for social inclusion. Notion Seeking Reorientation It is a wrong notion to believe that some people are born with disabilities. We judge these people because we feel there is something not right about them and therefore refer to them as people with disabilities. Truth be told, we all have disabilities. Having a speech impediment, bodily dysfunction, or mental challenges does not mean you are incomplete. If only we understood that our bad attitudes and inability to relate to others properly are also forms of disability. Gossiping, stealing, and inability to make or keep friends and more are also disabilities. Now, If the world around you can accept you with these disabilities by creating an all-inclusive community that accommodates all these aspects of you, then there is no reason for you to find it difficult to offer that same inclusive environment to those you consider disabled. Remember, they are not animals; they are humans like you and me. It is high time we learn to see people for who they are and not who they are not. Creating a home that allows for inclusivity is not just one person's responsibility; it is a collective responsibility. In line with this, I want to join my voice with that of the Ubon Humanitarian Foundation as they launch their project titled: 'We are This-Abled'. Hence, l invite you to please support our "We are This-Abled Project," which aims to build capacity among young people living with disabilities, equipping them with entrepreneurship skills for a more inclusive society. There's another Independence Day that we celebrate: July 26th. Thirty-four years ago, a second Independence Day was established on July 26. National Disability Independence Day celebrates the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which expands the rights and prohibits discrimination of the disabled community. Even with the passing of the ADA, many people with disabilities still experience tremendous barriers to employment. Enter Goodwill. At Goodwill of Greater Washington, more than 250 team members have a disability. They are provided competitive wages, access to health and retirement benefits, a Caring Fund to address emergency needs, as well as RISE Coaches to help them navigate resources and systems to remove barriers to achieving success at work and beyond! In honor of National Disability Independence Day, please support Goodwill’s life-changing programs by making a one-time or recurring donation. This will give more neighbors with disabilities the freedom and independence to improve their lives. LinkedIn Top Voice in Disability Advocacy | TEDx Speaker | Disability Speaker, DEIA Consultant, Content Creator | Creating Inclusive Workplaces for All Through Disability Inclusion and Accessibility | Keynote Speaker
Have you heard of the charity model of disability? The charity model says that people who are disabled need to be pitied and felt bad for. Under this model, disabled people are seen as having terrible lives and in need of saving. And who are the saviors? The charity workers and the fundraisers. They're the ones helping the "poor" disabled people. Oftentimes, this model takes away agency from disabled people and does not present us as positive, independent contributors to society. If you think about the telethons that you might be familiar with on TV, disabled people are brought out there to elicit feelings of tragedy and inspiration, and to compel people to donate. Unfortunately, these fundraisers typically support a narrative about disability being really bad. The social model of disability is quite different because it says that disabled people have nothing wrong with them. I resonate strongly with this. As a deafblind woman, I believe there’s nothing wrong with me. What’s wrong is our world. If the world was more accessible, would my blindness even be an issue? If I had access everywhere- online, every physical space, if I could participate in conversations, that would change my experience of the world. The social model also focuses on the collective power of disabled people. I hope that more people will be exposed to the social model of disability and other empowering models of disability like the human rights model. It’s time we stop pitying disabled lives. What are your thoughts on this? #DisabilityAwareness #DisabilityInclusion #DisabilityAdvocate

UNVEILING THE UPDATED DISABILITY REPORTING HANDBOOK Some of us at Media Diversity Australia and Griffith University's Inclusive Futures: Reimagining Disability have been working on this new version of the Disability Reporting Handbook since last year (version 1 took +3 years) and I'm thrilled that it has just been uploaded to the Media Diversity Australia website! Here are some of the changes that you can expect to see... A few edits were fairly minor tweaks and reflected changes in our community. For example, Disability Discrimination Commissioner at the Australian Human Rights Commission, Dr Ben Gauntlett, wrote the incredible Foreword. However, he is no longer working in this position. Statistical data was updated when more recent information was available on government websites. A new section was also added about The Disability Royal Commission - what it is and report findings about media. A new chapter was added that looks specifically at how best to include disability in advertising, marketing or other types of media. Awesome organisations like Unstereotype Alliance, Bus Stop Films, Shift 20 Initiative #ZebedeeTalent all get a mention too. So much has changed since the original version, but so many basic principles have stayed the same. Just like last time, this has all been done in collaboration with members of the disability community, working media professionals and Griffith University academics. The same 'rules' still apply when creating inclusive content - whether that's a news story, advertisement, feature film or something else... #NothingAboutUsWithoutUs - media professionals should try to amplify disability voices where possible, especially if the story is about disability (or even if it's not). Let's keep working together to create media that best reflects the society it serves! Thank you to our amazing team behind the handbook: Lisa Cox, Joe-Anne Kek-Pamenter, Prof. Elizabeth Kendall AM, Dr Faith Valencia-Forrester, Briana Blackett, Antoinette Lattouf, Jessica Johnson, Pip Miller, Rachel Worsley and Dr Dinesh Palipana OAM #InclusiveFutures #ReimaginingDisability #GriffithUniversity #Disability #Reporting #Media #Journalist #Communication #Advertising #InclusionMatters

Pokka & Iaminvisble film festival winner. Represented by Tricia Lawrence of Erin Murphy Literary Agency
She Has Dementia But That Didn't Stop her fight for disability access. I am talking about the incredible Alison Lim who has a rare type of dementia that affects her communication ability. However, this plucky lady went on to start a dementia support group(putting links in comment so please give the FB page a like and follow!) to help others with dementia. And her love and kindness didn't stop there. On Friday, she generously donated $500 to my film fundraiser. For those who aren't aware, I am a disabled filmmaker who made a feature with cast/crew with disabilities using our own resources and money. We came so far (filming is done and post production is almost complete) but realized we didn't have enough for accessibility aids like open captions and audio descriptions which helps people with blindness and hearing difficulties to watch the film. Her generous donation which she sent to to my bank account together with Warren Sheldon Humphries's equally kind donation has made it possible for me to pay Josh Tseng (a fellow PwD) to start work on open captions for the film and the trailer. Thank you so much Alison for supporting disability access! We're still raising money for audio descriptions which helps people with blindness to watch the film! So, please help to share, comment or like this post to boost it. The fundraiser link is in my profile! ALSO - PRIVATE SCREENING COMING SOON!! Keep you all posted!!😁 #Disability #Dementia #inclusion #InclusiveSociety #EnabledLives #DisabilityAwareness #SupportingDisability #InclusiveSG #DisabilityInclusion #DifferentAbilities #EMP2030 #CelebrateAbilities #BeTheChangeWeWantToSee #WeCanMakeADifference
