The study considers the technology landscape of future integrated terminals that have the capability, from a single device, of delivering SATCOM services across an array of orbital constellations (LEO, MEO and GEO) and the span of frequencies and modem technologies that exist on military, government and commercial systems (MILSAT, GOVSAT, COMSAT). This survey aims to provide the UK Ministry of Defence with comprehensive insights from both industry and academic organisations. #QuantaQuest | A ground-breaking defence research project exploring the application of quantum technologies in defence in the areas of secure communication and navigation has successfully closed. #Quantum Secure Communication and Navigation for European Defence - a 28-month EU-funded project under the Preparatory Action on Defence Research held its final meeting in December 2023, after delivering on a variety of operational scenarios and developments. Led by THALES SA (France), the project brought together nine defence companies and research institutes from three Member States - France, Italy, and the Netherlands - with a budget of approximately € 1.5 million. The project proposed the development of #quantumsensors and communication for defence applications in the following fields: - Fully autonomous positioning and timing for #military platforms; - Secure communication for Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (#C4ISR); - Quantum network of sensors for synergic connection. Today at European Defence Agency I had a Präsentation about "End-to-End Communication Solutions for critical and defense capabilities" at the "Space for Defence Industry Workshop". I showed how the individual Domains can be integrated by satellite communication solutions. I present our view on relevant mission szenarios and how the individual technologies can enable defence and security capabilities. In this context Lasercom can make System resilient and robust as a redundancy to RF connections. Adopting the software-defined-defence paradigm with the Intention to connecting the diffrent assets, multi-domain-operations can be enable through lasercom and last-mile-connections through smart antennas with intelligent beamforming in agile networks with routig and switching solutions. Also I commited myself for commercial friedly IPR and procurement rules to stimulate the technology development and competetivness of the defence and space Industry. Good Article . I fully agree with Neil's view on the need for diverse, resilient connectivity in military operations. Integrating Low Earth Orbit satellites and commercial networks boosts flexibility and secure communication, which is vital for modern multi-domain warfare. This ensures smooth operations even in challenging and unpredictable environments.

📡🌍 On 11-12 September the European Defence Agency (EDA) held the 26th EU SatCom Market Joint Procurement Arrangement (JPA) Meeting Group at Telespazio’s Fucino Space Centre in Italy. The event was an excellent opportunity for representatives from EU Ministries of Defence, CSDP actors, and EU bodies to discuss the evolving role of satellite communications in strengthening European defence capabilities. It allowed participants to exchange views on the latest innovations in satellite communications (SatCom) technologies, emphasizing their strategic importance in future #EUDefence and space operations. In parallel, EDA hosted the 8th EU SatCom Market Event, where trusted industry partners showcased commercial cutting-edge #SatCom solutions to all EU SatCom market contributing members. From GEO, MEO, and LEO satellites to mobile communication solutions, the event testified the rapid technological progress driving Europe’s #space and #security sectors. At the core of these discussions was the need for reinforced collaboration to equip #EUDefence forces with resilient and reliable SatCom solutions. EDA is at the forefront in fostering this cooperation. It’s great to see Clare Hopper and her team at CSCO continuing to find innovative ways to secure multi-band / multi-orbit / multi-network SATCOM capabiliites for America’s warfighters. Path diversity is critical to C2 resilience, day-to-day, but especially in a CDO environment. This drives many practical questions, not the least of which is, “With how many bespoke, vendor-specific terminals do we expect an organization to deploy?” And how do we flow information across commercial and DoD networks? And, most importantly, how do we make that seamless and transparent to the warfighter? These aren’t new questions, and securing access to new and emerging capabilities is part of the larger solution, but let’s not forget the criticality of terminals, ground segment, ground networks (including cross-links), and a robust strategy (and USG management of the same) to marry them all together. On September 10-12, I had the privilege of representing the Commission at the European Defence Agency’s (EDA) 26th EU SatCom Market Joint Procurement Arrangement (JPA) Meeting at Telespazio’s Fucino Space Centre in Italy. 🛰 🌍 Thank you EDA for the personal invitation, it was a nice opportunity to dive into the up-to-date world of commercial satellite communications (SATCOM) and their vital role in strengthening European defence capabilities. This gathering brought together key players from EU Ministries of Defence, CSDP missions, and EU bodies to discuss the latest advancements in SATCOM technology and of the EDA EU SATCOM MARKET (ESM) Project for #EUDefence. It was insightful to see how the innovation in GEO, MEO, and LEO satellites is transforming the landscape. 🚀 Additionally, I took part in finding solutions to some CSDP-related challenges with the EDA ESM Project, an essential step to ensure the smooth procurement of cutting-edge SATCOM solutions for our missions.
