ARPA-E Director Dr. Evelyn Wang recently attended the Climate Solutions Caucus Meeting on Geologic Hydrogen in Washington, D.C. Alongside Dr. Paris Smalls, PhD, CEO of Eden, David Guro, VP of Product Management at Koloma, and Dr. Geoffrey Ellis, Research Geologist at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), they delved into ARPA-E's cutting-edge exploration of geologic hydrogen. ARPA-E will be back on the Hill in two weeks to showcase some of our breakthrough technologies. Stay tuned for highlights and learn more about our disruptive technologies here: https://lnkd.in/ec9PeHdy.

Starting a new venture? Don't just leap; sometimes the biggest breakthroughs come from small, sensible steps. As we examine the energy industry on a recent episode of Wicked Energy with JG, it's clear: innovation doesn't always mean reinvention. As Josh Sigler, VP of Geology at XCL Resources, shared in his episode, look at Utah's #UintaBasin; they're not the biggest player, but they're making giant strides by applying practical, environmentally conscious technology. A mix of old-school geology with next-gen tech is leading to smarter oil extraction and a reduced environmental footprint. This is a masterclass in not just shattering the mold but also reshaping it piece by piece for real, lasting change. It's not about being the loudest in the room but rather the smartest. Continue to innovate, yes, but let each step be guided by practicality and purpose! #energy #sustainability #innovation

Program Manager in Advanced Materials for Energy and Environmental Sustainability at the European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency (EISMEA)
In the last two days we did the kick-off meeting of the #euEIC Mid- to long-term and systems integrated #energystorage Pathfinder challenge #portfolio. The 32 representatives of the 9 projects belonging to the technological categories of the Electrochemical, Thermal, Chemical looping and storage of energy carriers and Thermomechanical energy storage discussed with experts coming from @JRC, CINEA - European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency, Future Cleantech Architects and scientific organizations how to accelerate their technology innovation journey through sharing scientific and innovation expertise as well as facilities and equipment. Take home messages are: 1) collaboration is needed but to implement it you clearly need to demonstrate that it is a win-win approach; 2) tech to market plans needs to be strategically designed since day one of the deep tech innovation journey; 3) to achieve the ambitious goal of implementing the energy transition we need to design the proper policies and to develop technologies that are environmentally and economically sustainable.

At Energy Tech Summit in Bilbao this week, our panel discussed the critical state of rare earth supply chains. I'm anticipating this topic will only get louder in coming months/years. Some takeaways: 1. The supply crunch is enormous - projections indicate the 2035 supply deficit will equal the entire market size today! ($45B, 200 kT). 2. It’s a big problem: these materials are essential components in EVs, wind turbines, medical equipment, electronics, and defense systems, and 90%+ of the global supply is controlled by one country: China. 3. Expanding rare earth supply chains is not enough. We need to innovate our way out of this mess by developing alternative materials / feedstocks. University of Minnesota spinout Niron Magnetics, Inc. is an Anzu Partners portfolio company making strong permanent magnets without ANY rare earths – and with giant reductions in capex and emissions.
This week, Anzu Partners Principal Henk Both participated in a panel at Energy Tech Summit in Bilbao on Critical Resources: The Geopolitical Significance of Rare Earth Metals. Henk had the opportunity to discuss the geopolitical risks of today's rare earths supply chain and share the potential impact of our portfolio company Niron Magnetics, Inc.'s rare earth-free Clean Earth Magnet technology. #ETS2024 #cleantech #energytech #cleanenergy #rareearths

Yet-Ming Chiang is a longtime professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and he’s also a co-founder of two of the most well-known climate tech companies right now: Form Energy, which is developing long duration energy storage systems, and Sublime Systems, which is commercializing cement made with electrochemistry. He's also just turned 66 and when he was 65, he co-founded three new climate tech companies, all of which are still in relative stealth mode: One in electric aviation, one in lithium extraction from hard rock resources and another involving the stimulation of geologic hydrogen. Learn how Chiang became an entrepreneurial powerhouse, in addition to being an academic, in the first of Cipher’s stories on undercover climate superstars.
