I would encourage you to watch this video. Pay attention to the folks cutting the ribbons, or in this case taking photos in front of the step and repeat. Michael Dowling has the talking points down cold, but the tone of the message troubles me. Adopting a tone of infallibility is risky, particularly when his assertion regarding access and improved care for communities is far from certain. I would go so far as to say "debateable."
A bit of background, Northwell Health and Nuvance Health are merging, creating a massive system with 28 hospitals across New York and Connecticut.
They claim this will lead to "significant investments" and better access to care. There's a fine line between self-assurance and arrogance, a line that seems blurred given the speculative nature of the assertionsStudy after study shows consolidation increases costs (i.e., limits access) and provides no commensurate benefit on quality.
Hospital mergers drive up costs without improving care. Today, two-thirds of hospitals are part of large systems, and 80% of hospital markets are highly consolidated. This consolidation increases healthcare prices, making insurance premiums more expensive for everyone. It also suppresses wages, not just for healthcare workers, but for all employees when their employers have to pay more for health insurance.
Given the labor shortages and workforce burnout issues that Mr. Dowling bemoans, the effect on healthcare workers in consolidating systems is especially concerning. With fewer employers to choose from, workers have less bargaining power, leading to slower wage growth. This consolidation trend is bad news for patients and workers alike.
Despite the clear problems, it seems neither the American Hospital Association (AHA) nor regulatory bodies are paying attention. Hospital consolidation continues unchecked, harming Americans' wallets and workers' wages.
We now have a Chief Competition Officer and pronouncements on the Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) increased emphasis on promoting healthcare competition..... I wonder if anything will change.
Big news 📢 Northwell and Nuvance Health have entered into a strategic agreement to form a new integrated regional health system, combining the strengths of both organizations and advancing the level of care for patients across New York and Connecticut.
“This partnership opens a new and exciting chapter for Northwell and Nuvance Health and provides an incredible opportunity to enhance both health systems and take patient care and services to an even higher level,” said Michael Dowling, president and CEO of Northwell Health.
“We have similar missions in providing high-quality care for patients in the communities we serve. We look forward to building on the care that Nuvance Health’s 14,000 staff members and providers deliver each and every day.”

National Interprofessional Healthcare Month continues as Joseph Zorek, PharmD, BCGP, FNAP shares another panel from our work together.
'Shocking', from which this panel was pulled, was one of our earliest stories-- the 8th or 9th, out of 35, I believe.
It's one of my favorites, as it's very beautifully succinct.
Here, Joe and his team wrote a script that highlighted a situationally unique crisis: one that threw the readers right into the mix, without causing any sort of confusion. Throughout the story, we were able to find a really nice harmony between the words on the page and the visuals, and I fondly look back upon that success.
If you're curious to see this story in full, (as well as the rest of the stories that Joe has been showcasing) read his full post below for the name of his book, and seek it out!

This illustration comes from "SHOCKING: An Illustrated Case Study," co-authored with Jeff Fish and brought to life by George Folz.
It shines a light on the challenges faced by individuals who live in rural parts of America, where access to timely care - particularly in emergency situations - can have life-threatening consequences.
Fortunately for the main character in this case, the seamless transition of care from a talented #EMS team to an interprofessional critical care team ends well.

A Milestone Moment for Ovatient:
It has been almost three years since I embarked on a journey at MetroHealth to develop what I thought would simply be a virtual care strategy. Instead, we created a company that is putting people—not just patients—at the forefront of their health and wellness journey. Today, I am thrilled to announce a significant milestone in our journey: the launch of Ovatient's dedicated Virtual Care services at MetroHealth.
This week marked a pivotal moment as MetroHealth welcomed its first patients to experience virtual care like never before—care that is connected, coordinated, and, most importantly, convenient. Our virtual care services ensure that patients across Ohio can access high quality care where they are: at home, at work, or on the move, bringing our vision of comprehensive, patient-centered care, connected to a patient's trusted health system to life.
I want to take a moment to celebrate and thank MUSC Health and The MetroHealth System (Cleveland, OH) as both investors and our first customers. To our dedicated team of virtual providers and our entire group of care team members, your hard work, dedication, and commitment to excellence have been instrumental in bringing our shared vision to reality. Your contribution is reshaping how health systems approach patient care, making it more accessible and integrated than ever before. Your trust, collaboration, and shared vision are the cornerstones of our success.
Visit us at www.ovatient.com to learn more about how we're transforming healthcare. I invite you all to join us on this exciting journey. Together, we are not just changing the way care is delivered; we are setting a new standard for what patients can expect from their healthcare experience and their health system of choice. Let's continue to redefine healthcare, one patient, one personalized care experience across a lifetime. MUSC Health and State of South Carolina, here we come!

A year and a half ago, we shared a vision: to put people – not just patients – at the center of how they receive care and improve their health.
This week, that vision became reality. The MetroHealth System (Cleveland, OH) launched its dedicated Virtual Care services, powered by Ovatient, and welcomed patients for the first time. Our team of dedicated virtual providers and care team members are working closely with our partners at MetroHealth to provide patients with connected, coordinated and convenient virtual care. MetroHealth patients can get care wherever they are in Ohio, including at home, at work or on the go. Need an appointment? Visit https://lnkd.in/ehKTrvG2.
With Ovatient, a patient's virtual care journey is connected to our health system partners. That includes MyChart, a patient's medical record and engagement with their care teams. Our patients can go from virtual to in-person appointments with confidence that their care will be tailored to their needs.
We are honored to collaborate with MUSC Health and MetroHealth to redesign and transform how health systems care for their patients. This is just the beginning. Join us at www.ovatient.com.
