RIYADH: Environmental projects in Saudi Arabia are set to receive over SR6 billion ($1.60 billion) in investments until 2030, as revealed by a senior official.  Addressing a Riyadh forum, Saudi Deputy Minister of Environment, Water, and Agriculture, Mansour bin Hilal Al-Mushaiti, said the Kingdom’s leadership had identified the sector as playing a critical role in the Vision 2030 economic diversification initiative as it impacts public health and overall quality of life. It’s something we do every day—like navigating a tricky sidewalk or taking an umbrella if the weather looks uncertain. At its core, EIA is about expecting and minimizing the possible impacts of our actions on the environment and society. Partidário (2012) describes EIA as a "forward-looking tool" that guides decision-makers on the potential outcomes of their actions. Noble (2015) similarly notes that EIA aims to identify, assess, and reduce the effects of our actions on both people and nature. Weiner (1997) simply defines EIA as focusing on two basic principles: considering environmental quality and acting on what we learn. This initiative represents a major step forward in our country's commitment to sustainability through public procurement. As a key contributor during the consultation phase, the Infrastructure Sustainability Council (ISC) is delighted to see the IS Ratings scheme endorsed by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW). This endorsement signifies that the IS Ratings scheme can be used to meet the policy requirements and report on critical areas such as climate action, circular economy, and environmental impact for infrastructure projects over $7.5m. We are looking forward to continuing to work with industry to advance sustainability outcomes, develop capability in the market and ensure that data is leveraged to drive impact.
