As part of Africa-China Cooperation to control desertification and embrace Ecological civilization, I took the opportunity to highlight the importance of the environment in general and trees in particular as well as China's achievement in this regard. I thought, in addition to my remarks during the closing ceremony, using my "INANGA" the Rwanda traditional musical instrument, could serve to emphasize the need to protect the Planet. I learned a lot from colleagues from the African Union and from African countries that attended the event. Since Ecological Civilization has no alternatives, SDG 15 " Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification and halt and reverse land degradation, and halt biodiversity loss" will be achieved if and only if SDG 17 "Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development" is well activated. This is the essence of Africa-China cooperation when it comes to the "Great Green Wall Initiative".

United Nations' Curt Garrigan delivered a keynote on our CDA Spring Conference 2024. In his capacity as Chief of the Sustainable Urban Development Section in the Environment and Development Division of United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN ESCAP) with its headquarters in Bangkok, Thailand, Curt gave a keynote titled 'Cities as Global Hot Spots of Climate Action - Resilience through Collaboration, Evidence Based Decisions and Innovation in the 21st Century'. With two thirds of humanity living in the Asia Pacific region already now, more than 50% of the Asia-Pacific population lives in urban areas. Approximately 70% of the region’s emissions come from cities. 99 of the top 100 metropolises facing environmental risks are in the region. Overall, Asia Pacific accounts for more than half of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In his keynote Curt addressed the challenges in this region and talked about steps to be taken towards implementing the UN SDGs and contribute to more resilient and liveable cities in the 21st century. The slides of his speech are now publicly available on our CDA-website here: https://lnkd.in/d-KgdvAF

🌍 **Reflecting on an Inspiring Conference: Greening the African Horizon** 🌿 Last month, I had the incredible opportunity to attend the "Greening the African Horizon" conference, and I am still energized by the wealth of knowledge, ideas, and passion that were shared! 🌱 The discussions around sustainable development, environmental stewardship, and the innovative green solutions shaping Africa’s future were not only insightful but also deeply inspiring. It was encouraging to see leaders from various sectors—government, academia, business, and civil society—come together with a shared vision of a greener, more sustainable Africa. The event highlighted the urgency of addressing climate change and the immense potential we have as a continent to lead the charge towards environmental sustainability. From renewable energy innovations to community-driven conservation efforts, the ideas presented underscored the need for collaborative action. I am grateful to have been part of such an important conversation and to have connected with like-minded individuals committed to making a difference. It’s a reminder that together, we can turn challenges into opportunities and leave a lasting positive impact on our environment and future generations. A big thank you to the organizers, speakers, and fellow attendees for making this event so impactful. Looking forward to continuing the dialogue and taking actionable steps towards a greener African horizon! 🌍🌿 #Sustainability #GreenAfrica #ClimateAction #GreeningTheAfricanHorizon #RenewableEnergy #EnvironmentalStewardship #FutureOfAfrica #GLFAfrica2024
