While it faces policy headwinds and barriers to entry, agroecology has “a huge role to play” in both mitigating climate change and promoting climate justice, says Ernesto Mendez, professor of agroecology and environmental studies at the University of Vermont and head of the university’s new Agroecology Institute. “We have these methods that can support practices for mitigation and adaptation, but we also want to incorporate and have experience bringing in equity and justice issues.” 🗞 Read more about agroecology and its potential with a special focus on the Philippines on Reasons to be Cheerful 👉 Article also including quotes from Daniel Moss Agroecology Fund https://lnkd.in/dbqNQFSN #agroecology #climatejustice

The African continent faces a number of complex challenges related to food security, climate change, and the degradation of natural resources. In response to these issues, #agroecology is emerging as a promising and viable holistic solution that integrates ecological principles into food production systems. In contrast to conventional methods that often rely on intensive chemical inputs, agroecology aims to create more resilient, productive, and equitable food systems. By exploring farming practices based on natural cycles and community participation, agroecology contributes to biodiversity preservation, all the while combating soil degradation and improving the quality of life for rural communities. As such, it’s got clear potential as a catalyst for positive change that could lay the groundwork for long-term sustainable agriculture in Africa. "We know our food systems are broken, resulting in malnutrition, food waste, biodiversity loss, land degradation and climate change. But we also know that there is a great opportunity for transformation, by harnessing the knowledge and solutions already in use. And one of these solutions is #agroecology." Eliane Ubalijoro The Transformative Partnership Platform on Agroecology (Agroecology TPP) works to accelerate and co-ordinate work on agroecology across international, national and local scales and contexts, towards transitions to more sustainable agricultural and food systems. In March, the TPP held its second Members Forum meeting in Nairobi, with both online and in-person participation. The meeting served not only to share progress and assess key achievements but also to identify successful strategies, pinpoint existing challenges, and collectively determine priorities for the future, all while enhancing synergies. Thank you very much to the Agroecology TPP team of Global Landscapes Forum (GLF) for inviting me to reflect on Agroecology. It is an approach I truly believe in and now with climate change effects becoming every year a more severe challenge for farmers we need to urgently identify locally adapted and sustainable agricultural approaches to mitigate and adapt to climate change. Agroecology, by placing farmers at the center and promoting beneficial eco-system services in a transdisciplinary approach has the potential to identify applicable practices. #Agroecology #SustainableAgriculture #aeTPP

AGROECOLOGY IS THE WAY FORWARD IN SPAIN 🌳🇪🇸 Check out this report by the Dutch government highlighting the efforts of our partner, AlVelAl, in southeast Spain. The AlVelAl initiative focuses on restoring a territory of 1,000,000ha, enhancing the productivity and biodiversity of deteriorated agroecosystems, creating employment opportunities, and fostering social cohesion in the region over a 20-year span. The report underscores how agroecological approaches - like those implemented by AlVelAl - can mitigate the impact of climate challenges on the Spanish agricultural sector, offering a pathway towards sustainable and resilient farming systems Follow the link to read more: https://lnkd.in/d9CEH-Mt 📷 by Gabriela Hengeveld #NaturebasedSolutions #Agroecology #LandscapeRestoration

Technology, labour, energy efficiency, productivity, and social movement are all essential issues for agroecology's future. In this article published by Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung I explore this briefly and recommend steps to make #agroecology the future that it should be. Agroecology holds the power to revolutionize African agriculture and ensure a sustainable food system for generations through offering a feasible pathway that links the welfare of people with the health of the land. By prioritizing local knowledge, community-led initiatives, and environmentally conscious practices, agroecology can help African farmers boost productivity, adapt to climate change, and preserve biodiversity.
