🌽 🐄 Our #foodsystems today face major challenges. But change is coming! We can unite and transform our food systems towards social and environmental #sustainability and #justice through #agroecology. Agroecology—working with #nature, not against it—provides solutions and is increasingly backed by scientists, social movements, #farmers, and governments. They have come together in a Coalition with the mission to accelerate the #transformation of food systems through agroecology. Happy to inform you that Slow Food Uganda was represented by our Head of Programs in Zimbabwe on the Agroecology Learning exchange that took place between 16th and 19th. A lot was discussed but the key note scooped out was about the great move to have agriculture donors inject more funds in the grassroot-led organizations as a way to combat the contemporary issues affecting global agri-systems. But what exactly does regenerative agriculture encompass, and how does it set itself apart from agroecology? Today in honor of #InternationalSeedsDay we celebrate so many of our grantee partners around the world whose work is rooted in farmer managed seed systems—a necessary ingredient of food sovereignty. Agroecology Fund joins long-term partner Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa (AFSA) a call to amplify the voices of #African #smallholder farmers and help them reclaim and defend their rights for free and unrestricted use of their own #seeds and their long-established seed saving and exchange systems. “Farmers’ seeds are not merely a resource but the lifeblood of Africa’s food sovereignty. For centuries, small-scale #African farmers have been the backbone of the continent’s agricultural success, nurturing a system that supports over 80% of the population with diverse, nutritious, and resilient crops. However, these traditional practices face increasing threats from industrial #agriculture and multinational #seed corporations, influenced by the legacies of colonization and commerce. “Seed is Life” campaign aims to empower communities to reclaim and protect their agricultural heritage and ensure food sovereignty for future generations. The campaign’s objectives include: 🌸 Elevating Farmer Managed Seed Systems as pillars of biodiversity and food sovereignty across Africa. ☘ Advocating for policy reform and legal support to ensure Farmer Managed Seed Systems are recognized and supported, protecting farmers’ rights to save, exchange, and sell their seeds. 🌱 Building a strong continent-wide movement that educates on the importance of Farmer Managed Seed Systems for ecological health, food security, and nutrition.

Seed Sovereignty is Food Sovereignty

In a new op-ed for Alliance magazine Agroecology Fund Co-Director Daniel Moss calls for an increase in funding to grassroots agroecology movements from #climatephilanthropy “The world sits in a precarious place, and deepening investments in grassroots movements that build truly just and sustainable food systems is essential. We call on the greater climate philanthropy community to seize this moment and dramatically increase funding of grassroots movements whose work is rooted in research and learning processes that result in effective solutions for local contexts. Without funding frontline communities, we fear that our efforts to build climate resilient food systems will be thwarted.” https://lnkd.in/gYeycybP
