"The World Heritage Leadership (WHL) programme is launching a 2nd edition of the Heritage Place Lab (HPL), focused on strengthening networks across research and site management in the context of the World Heritage Convention. In its Article 5, the UNESCO World Heritage Convention calls on State Parties to develop and encourage research for the protection of their cultural and natural heritage, placing on science an important role on its implementation. Even though the World Heritage system provides such space for exchange and collaboration between researchers and practitioners, this has not been sufficiently and systematically explored. Strengthening the interlinkages between site managers and researchers can assist the conservation of natural and cultural heritage by building capacities on managers to understand how research can support their work and what type of research is needed to address management issues. Eligibility Criteria 1. World Heritage site managers who are seeking collaborations with researchers to improve their management processes and decision-making. 2. Sites facing categories of issues such as: a) Development pressures; b) Climate change impacts; c) Legal frameworks and boundaries; d) Improvement on buffer zone(s); e) Governance: rightsholders and stakeholders involvement; f) Integrating Indigenous, traditional, and local knowledge into management. The Heritage Place Lab 2024-2025 will consist of a series of online and in-person workshops to be held between September 2024 and April 2025. The expected outcome is to develop tools to facilitate the exchange between site managers and researchers, establishing working methodologies with researchers and research institutions to design research projects and strategies to support World Heritage site management. Applications should be submitted by 30 May 2024. Pre-selected World Heritage properties and their site managers will be contacted and invited for an online interview with the World Heritage Leadership that will take place in June 2024." Work has commenced on a joint project between CSIRO's Valuing Sustainability Future Science Platform and Gondwana Link. Titled 'Bright Spots' (their suggestion!) the project is primarily examining key factors in Gondwana Link's development and its 22 years of formal operation in order to answer questions such as 'Why do some large landscape-scale restoration efforts succeed? What makes some programs able to overcome challenges and navigate changing circumstances?' The project will probe the forms of governance principles, measures or processes that are valuable for landscape scale collaborative restoration programs in order to embed ‘good’ or ‘just’ practices. It will test findings from Gondwana Link in different contexts, including through engaging with other large landscape scale restoration projects across Australia, and examine particular examples of ‘bright spots’ within Gondwana Link, such as the transformative work with First Nations groups. While there has been an abundance of biophysical studies into various aspects of the Gondwana Link program and area, this is the first major social sciences effort to understand the habitats and interactions of that particularly significant species – humans. As such we have strongly welcomed this opportunity and look forward to sharing what will be uncovered. A short flier on the program can be downloaded from https://lnkd.in/gcdBXNjb .

I had the privilege of attending the transformative conference, "Towards a Lunar Village? Sustainable Building and Society on Earth and Space," held on the 18th and 19th of March at the Schader-Forum in Darmstadt, Germany. This gathering was a beacon for sustainability enthusiasts and experts, focusing on the challenges and innovations in sustainable building, both on our home planet and beyond. As a collaborator of the EU*Asia Institute and an adjunct professor at UDIMA, I was thrilled to contribute to this pivotal conversation. My presentation, "Lunar Ventures and Sustainability: Legal Pathways in Utilizing Moon Water Ice for Propellant in the Space Economy," aimed to shed light on the critical legal considerations necessary for the ethical and sustainable utilization of space resources. Sharing this stage on the 18th of March was not just an honor; it was an opportunity to contribute to a meaningful dialogue about our future in space and on Earth. This event, born from the collaboration between the ESSCA EU*Asia Institute, the Institute for Housing and Environment (IWU), and the Schader Foundation, symbolized a significant leap towards integrating sustainable practices in construction and space exploration. It reinforced the importance of collaborative efforts and international cooperation in addressing the environmental challenges we face. The discussions I had and the insights I gained were truly enriching. I am more committed than ever to sharing my research and findings with the community, hopeful that together, we can forge pathways towards sustainable living on Earth and in the cosmos. For anyone interested in the crossroads of space policy and sustainability, the outcomes of this conference serve as a guiding star for what's possible when we come together to tackle the challenges of our time. Let's continue to push the boundaries of innovation and collaboration for a sustainable future, on Earth and beyond. 🌍🌌 #Sustainability #SpacePolicy #LunarVillage #ConferenceReflections #JordiSandalinas #Innovation https://lnkd.in/dXfuEuvw

#NewArticle Identifying the role of industrial heritage in the European Capital of Culture programme Zachary M. Jones & Xinwen Zhang This paper examines in depth the European Capital of Culture (ECoC) programme, as it is one of the longest standing Capital of Culture programmes in the world and has a significant record of investment and urban transformation. In this paper, we survey and categorise the inclusion of industrial heritage within the ECoC programme in 36 host cities and regions spread across Europe. This research provides the most comprehensive understanding to date of the specific forms of interaction between industrial heritage and ECoCs to better understand the kinds of relationships that have taken place. https://lnkd.in/ezGpKfpG
