POV: Broadening Perspectives in Design Education Walking out of an interview two years ago and not getting the job was a moment of clarity when I realized the administrator’s vision for the design and technology program was disappointingly limited to a traditional woodshop. My passion for design extends far beyond woodworking, encompassing a holistic approach that includes digital fabrication, user-centered design, fashion design, engineering design, electronics, and food design. This experience underscored the need for a broader understanding of design technology, one that fosters creativity, interdisciplinary learning, and real-world applications. From MacGyver to Masterpiece: Wild College Product Design Journey Remember those college product design projects where creativity met desperation, and hot glue guns were basically extensions of our bodies? *Exactly like this project being inspired from Easter, where resurrection of Holy is a belief and this lamp taking shape of an egg is nothing more than a reflection of fertility and new life in itself.*🛋️ Sure, they might not have won any Red Dot awards, but those projects taught us some invaluable lessons: Think outside the box (or, in this case, the cereal carton): Necessity truly is the mother of invention, especially when your budget is a crumpled five-dollar bill. *Embrace the power of teamwork: When your teammate accidentally superglues your prototype to the table, you learn to communicate, problem-solve, and laugh (hysterically) under pressure. *Fail fast, fail often: Remember that exploding toaster oven you tried to turn into a self-cleaning bread maker? Yeah, those "learning experiences" sting, but they make the eventual successes taste oh-so-sweet. Now, looking back at my current work, I can't help but chuckle at those college contraptions. But hey, they were stepping stones, duct-taped one at a time, to the sleek designs and innovative solutions I get to create today. ✨ So, raise a (cardboard) glass to all the wild, wacky, and yet SUSTAINABLE college projects! A few years ago, the designer and engineer Peter Skillman held a competition to build the tallest possible structure in 20 minutes with the following items: - 20 pieces of uncooked spaghetti - one yard of transparent tape - one yard of strings - one standard-size marshmallow After running this challenge with more than 2000 people from various backgrounds, Skillman was surprised by the results. Business school students performed the worst. What was even more shocking was that the best performing group were not engineering prodigies or physics majors. They were kindergartens. What happened? The business students were talking and thinking strategically. They brainstormed ideas, debuted the best options, asked savy questions. The process resulted in a shared decision to pursue one strategy. The kindergartners took a different approach. By the time the 20 min were up, they had experimented with 8 to 10 different structures before landing on the most stable one. The kindergartners simply started building."

Around this time 15 years ago, I was starting my industrial design education as a sophomore at RISD. If I could, here's what I would tell myself back then: 𝗗𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝙩𝙤 𝘆𝗼𝘂. I didn't really take much control over how or what I learned. I put a lot of stock in what my professors were telling me. I didn't look at what students from other schools were doing. In a lot of ways, my design education was steered by other (usually well meaning) people who may or may not have interests aligned with mine. If I could go back, I would take a much more active role in planning my classes, setting themes for my projects, and working towards the kind of design portfolio and career I wanted. Don't let your education just happen to you. Think carefully about where you want to take your education and career. Off to a flying start! 🪽   Our second-year Master’s students started their Master’s projects last week with a seminar. This will be their last project before they graduate from Design School Kolding, and it will consist of a design, a written assignment, and an oral exam. In the Master’s project, the student is able to put their entire professional expertise in play. Knowledge, skills, and competencies acquired through the specialization are demonstrated in the solution of a self-initiated, well-defined and delimited design-professional problem in collaboration with one or more external partners. The Master’s project is the student’s framework to demonstrate their own design-professional potential in a relevant design project 🙌 Industrial design student Lotte Rahbek, focusing on Design for Play, gives us insight into her project: “For my exam project, I will be tasked with designing a new solution for the user test setup at the LEGO Group®️. Utilizing Designerly methods such as Design Thinking and Empowering Changes, I aim to optimize the current test setup for various aspects like concepts, products, and experiences. Throughout the project, I'll consider how the recommended solution can be scaled sustainably within the company. I'll challenge the existing structure to explore new possibilities within the testing setup and demonstrate the application of a Play Designer's expertise in novel areas of the value chain.” Over the next months, we will share more updates on various Master’s Projects from different students. Their solutions, often elegantly simple, prompt us to rethink our approaches. Today, we're spotlighting Plains Farm Academy, one of our finalists. One student proposed an innovative idea: turning desks into whiteboards. Recognising the frequent use of whiteboards in lessons, she found it inconvenient to retrieve them repeatedly. Instead, she suggested integrating whiteboard functionality directly into desks for seamless idea sharing. What are your thoughts on this design?
