Feeling the pressure before taking time off? Time away from work is full of hope, fun, new experiences, and time with family and friends but why is the run up to finishing work always so stressful? We know it’s coming, we plan for it but there always seems to be a race to the finish line of putting the ‘out of office’ on. Some of our approaches that create the pressure are: - being over optimistic about what I can achieve in the short term (one of my personal favourites!) - feeling guilty about leaving work, clients and colleagues behind - worrying how our time off will impact others - Feeling like it’s ‘all on us’ and no-one is available/willing/able/competent enough to step in This list got me curious about how most of these approaches are attached to our sense of worth; we’re only useful or have value if we’re merrily ticking tasks off our ‘to-do’ list and when the value we bring is only in the visible outcomes that we can measure. So before time away we 'not so merrily' tick off as many tasks as possible and strive to meet our measured targets before we head out of the office door to super prove our worth to others, and ourselves before disappearing. The uncertainty that a change in our normal routine brings (even if it’s wanted change like a holiday) can lead to us getting super busy in familiar, routine tasks that we know and feel certain about. In reality our worth in the real or virtual office is much, much more than this reductionist, machine like approach to work. Our human strength of how we show up, how we experience ourselves and how we connect with others speaks bigger volumes and is the glue that connects people and holds cultures together, creating the conditions for thriving. People don’t remember what you said or how many tasks you achieved, but they do remember how you made them feel. How we show up for others and ourselves is deeply driven by our assumptions, beliefs and values about ourselves and our worth. 240331 – As we end the first quarter, many of us are desperately doing a stock-take, how are we progressing on our 2024 resolutions? Are we on target or lagging behind? What must we do to stay on course, or even catch up on our schedule?   However we are doing on the resolutions, one thing that we can do, is to learn to work smarter. But many of us, have misconceptions about working smart. We need to be smarter, about working smarter.   Firstly, we may think that working smart is a nicer way to call someone being lazy. Working smart is not about being lazy. It is doing what needs to be done, not lower in quality, without putting in as much time or effort. It is thinking of creative ways, that require less, but accomplishing as much.   Secondly, we may think that working smart is about cutting corners. Working smart is about working as hard, but achieving more, by maximising the full potential of all the resources, and using the most effective and efficient ways.   Working smart, is not a new concept. We have always done it. But in the midst of our busyness, we may start to just focus on meeting the bare minimum results, or even compromising on the accomplishments.   Working smart is knowing what we want to achieve. It is knowing our strengths, and blind spots. It is knowing the resources that we have, and how best to utilise them. One thing that most may have mistaken, working smart includes working hard.   With the start of the new quarter, we can all work smarter, to accomplish more, in work, or play, for the balance that we want!     => working smart is always useful => it is not about being lazy => it is not about doing less => it is about doing as much, and accomplishing more     #workingsmart #alwaysneeded #notlazy #notdoingless #beingefficient #beingeffective #workinghard #knowingourselves #strengths #blindspots #resources #accomplishmore #balance #careertips #personalmastery #careermanagement #careermastery #personaldevelopment #personaleffectiveness

When I joined my first company post-MBA, I was convinced I needed to make a splash, even from my #remotework setup. So, naturally, I dove headfirst into the virtual deep end, determined to leave my mark. What could go wrong, right? Picture this: #Dayone, I’m logging into the team call like I own the place, armed with color-coded charts and a pep talk that could rival a TED Talk. I thought I’d revolutionize the team meeting schedule, optimize the virtual background choices, and maybe even solve World Peace during the lunch break. The reality? I was more like a caffeinated squirrel on a mission to rearrange digital nuts. I tried too hard, too soon. My brilliant ideas? More like brilliant disasters! I pitched a new workflow system in my first week, which ended up looking like a spaghetti mess of confusion. Cue the anxious spiral: I was demotivated, derailed, and dreading my own reflection in the laptop camera. Then it hit me – I needed to hit pause. Happy #MomentumMonday as we kick off our first work week of June!! Yesterday we talked about how we use Sunday to plan not only the week ahead, but the month ahead and beyond as well. Part of that is our social media theme and general schedule of posts, and this month's theme is all about testing the systems you've built and put into place. And the biggest test of that system is trusting your team, your contractors, and yourself to carry out their tasks as part of your systems. In other words, you need to let go of the reins a little bit and let the system work. It's a scary and challenging task, but one that is necessary to continue your business' momentum, because it can never reach its true potential if you're always stuck in the weeds! #StartStrong #Trust #System #Test #TrustTheProcess

Startup Tip of The Week: Set your boundaries There will always be more work, and it will fill 100 hours per week if you let it. That's not good for you or the company. Figure out your priorities outside of work, in collaboration with the key stakeholders in your life (partner, kids, etc). This means setting specific goals. For example, instead of ‘spend one-on-one time with my partner,’ agree to have dinner together at least five nights a week,” Things will come up, it won't be perfect, but hold your boundaries as much as possible, and renegotiate with your life and work stakeholders if you find you're consistently unable to hold your boundaries. If something new comes up, does something else have to slip or get reassigned? Own that discussion and have it upfront. Do not just let things slip without communicating that. Time management is key to everything you are able to achieve in life. Growing up, my parents always encouraged us to participate in a lot of extra curricular activities. Whether it’s going to art competitions, reciting poetry, playing basketball, participating in music and dance shows. By the time I was 14, I was already tutoring a batch of 8 kids besides my school, and working at a non-profit. By the time I was 17 and settled here in Canada, I held multiple jobs simultaneously while taking full course load in university. And it continued on. The more I grow up, my capacity to manage more commitments/activities continues to expand. The sky is the limit♾️ I am continuously learning how you can stay #productive but NOT BUSY. I often get asked if I get time to relax? Well yes! I’m not a super human, and I prioritize my health and well being over everything. I’ll admit that sometimes I take last minute commitments that throws me back. I’m only human, I make mistakes, then I learn and adapt. So here’s few things that I do to manage my time efficiently: 🗓️ Organize my calendar every Sunday so I know what my week looks like. For example: I schedule additional room for “focus time” where I take care of adhoc urgent things or just focus to get things done. 📧 I don’t push things forward. I have set certain standards for myself. My communications response time is 2 hours max (for all 6 inboxes I have). If it’s repetitive in nature, it’s automated so it’s instant. If I don’t know the answer, I’ll still reply and let them know I’m looking into it, and create a workflow for myself with set deadlines. ‼️ I excel at setting priorities. This one came with lots of trails and errors. If I have to action 10 things urgently, I quickly identify the dependencies. Which one has the highest dependency (will this impact someone else’s work?) and which ones have the highest risks? And I can quickly prioritize accordingly and get things done! 🤖 Automate tasks that are mundane and invest in tools that makes my life easier. I focus on using my “brain” for critical things and I created automations & a SECOND BRAIN (my information management systems) that’s easily findable, accessible, reusable and interoperable. So my brain is relaxed & focused on strategic thinking and not overwhelmed by having to carry all information. 👏🏼 I trust my team. I’m not a leader who spends time reviewing every piece of work my team produces. That’s a waste of time. I prefer empowering people to do their thing and ensure that I provide them tools & support so they have more accountability. I do review a lot based on impact (again this is where I am good at identifying which needs my attention and which is good for my team(s) to run with). Always think about the “worst case scenario” and identify if I would be okay with it or I need to intervene. There’s lot more but I will leave it here today.
