Key discussion highlights from our recent ERI Validation Workshop... 1. Improving the communications performance of security forces allows them to build trust with communities. This leads to an increasingly positive role for the SNA in community-level conflict resolution. eg. SNA CIMIC Courses - Delivered by ERI-trained SNA CIMIC trainers to battalion-level staff in the FMSs Kismayo, Beledweyne, Baidoa Feb-July 2024. 2. The speed of interventions when local conflicts arise is critical. Providing communities with the tools to articulate their needs and resolve local disputes themselves allows for rapid de-escalation of grievances by locally involved stakeholders. e.g. Community Atmospheric Panels and Community Dispute Resolution Committees, Baidoa, Wisil, Janaale, 2021-2024. 3. ERI's constant interaction with and deeper understanding of communities means engagements are planned with local sensitivities in mind so communities feel like their concerns and local issues have been factored in. This leads to increased community ownership and buy-in into stabilisation. e.g. Community dialogue forums in NRRAs in JL, GM, SW And HS States. 4. Addressing the cultural barriers that limit women's participation requires a continuous effort that is sensitive to differing perspectives on the role of gender. Despite challenges, ensuring that women's voices are heard and respected in community discussions has fostered greater social cohesion and trust amongst communities. e.g. ERI has worked in close partnership with it's sister project, Women to Women Security (W2WS), on our stabilisation activity. This was particularly notable in JL State, where ERI delivered stabilisation activity alongside W2WS staff in NRRAs.

ROLE OF WOMEN IN CONFLICT, CONFLICT PREVENTION, RESOLUTION AND PEACE BUILDING Women play crucial roles in conflict prevention, resolution, and peacebuilding efforts worldwide. Their contributions are instrumental in addressing the root causes of conflicts and building sustainable peace. Here are some key aspects of the role of women in these areas: 1. Inclusive Decision-Making: Women's participation in decision-making processes related to conflict resolution and peacebuilding is essential for ensuring that diverse perspectives and needs are considered. Their involvement can lead to more holistic and effective strategies for ending conflicts and promoting reconciliation. 2. Mediation and Negotiation: Women often serve as mediators and negotiators in peace processes, leveraging their unique skills in communication, empathy, and collaborative problem-solving. Their involvement can help de-escalate tensions and facilitate dialogue between conflicting parties. 3. Community Engagement: Women are frequently at the forefront of community-level peace initiatives, working to bridge divides, foster dialogue, and promote reconciliation within their local contexts. Their grassroots efforts can be instrumental in building trust and resilience within communities affected by conflict. 4. Advocacy for Human Rights: Women are powerful advocates for human rights, justice, and the protection of vulnerable populations during and after conflicts. They often champion efforts to address gender-based violence, protect human rights defenders, and promote the empowerment of marginalized groups. 5. Post-Conflict Reconstruction: Women's contributions to post-conflict reconstruction and development efforts are crucial for addressing the social, economic, and psychological impacts of conflict. Their involvement in rebuilding communities and institutions can help foster sustainable peace and stability. 6. Policy Influence: Women's leadership in shaping national and international policies related to conflict prevention and peacebuilding is vital for promoting gender-responsive approaches and ensuring that the specific needs of women and girls are addressed. Recognizing and supporting the active involvement of women in conflict prevention, resolution, and peacebuilding is essential for creating more inclusive, sustainable, and effective strategies for addressing global conflicts.

Human Rights and Development: Shalom-SCCRR’s Intervention Methodology in Pursuit of Sustainable Peace within Eastern Africa Conflict Zones. We will not enjoy security without development, we will not enjoy development without security, and we will not enjoy either without respect for human rights.’ Former United Nations Secretary-General, The Late Kofi Annan Development is intrinsic to human rights. Defined as the inalienable freedoms to be enjoyed by all members of the human race as according to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), human rights can either be understood in terms of the recognition or respect for human dignity, moral guidelines meant to promote and protect human values and identity or the ability to improve one’s living standard. Human nature dictates that people will in most cases seek progressive pathways for positive growth which generally translate to the improvement or betterment of their wellbeing. In this regard, conditions limiting or hindering the ability of people to improve their wellbeing can be described as a situation of Structural violence. Structural violence refers to when human beings are influenced so that their somatic and mental realizations are below their potential realization (Galtung, 1969). In other words, when people are unable to access their basic human needs and basic rights, they’re exposed to situations of structural conflict which if unresolved, can frequently lead to manifest violence.
