I think this is a good approach to Generative AI in its current form considering its substantial ethical and accuracy issues, particularly important for the brand and mission of RNZ. Of note is that even though it currently is not to be used by their own journalistic team, if Generative AI is used in any fashion that there is a robust verification and transparency process involved.
How media approach AI technologies is rightfully an ongoing topic of interest, and we want to share how RNZ is approaching this emerging technology by publishing our AI Principles. RNZ audiences need to be able to trust that our storytelling is robust, credible and transparent and that whenever we consider trying new things we do so in a way that upholds trust and is consistent with RNZ’s Charter. The six principles outline RNZ’s approach to AI, our general policy that we do not publish or broadcast work created by generative AI, the oversight that we use in any application of AI and our policy of full transparency with our audience.
