Thrilled to share that for the past 5 months I studied at Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto, where I deepened my technical understanding on renewable energy technologies form a physical and chemical perspective, and obtained experiences in Life Cycle Assesments and Project Financing. This week, I've embarked on my master's graduation project from Complex Systems Engineering and Management at the TU Delft. My thesis focuses on analysing Price and Volume Risks for Offshore Wind Farms under Zonal and Nodal Offshore Pricing - a complex and highly relevant topic for future offshore wind developments in the North Sea!

Today marks the end of my journey as a PhD student, with the successful defense of my dissertation titled "Exploratory assessment of adaptive pathways toward renewable energy systems: A modelling framework facilitating decision making under deep uncertainty". It was a challenging, yet highly rewarding journey, which I enjoyed throughout all these years. I would like to express my gratitude to my supervisor, prof. Summer season is almost over, and with it I cannot miss the opportunity to praise Saule Gudziute for defending successfully her MSc thesis "Optimal sizing of co-located wind-energy storage farm to reduce wind curtailment". Personally, it has been a very interesting project, which can help a broad audience in the wind industry since the common problem of curtailment, and tackled by a motivated student! This thesis investigated the mitigation strategies of energy curtailment through the use of energy storage technologies and their sizing when co-located with an offshore wind farm. An optimization algorithm was developed to determine the energy storage size for three different scenarios: total curtailment mitigation, curtailment mitigation subject to technical storage constraints, and curtailment mitigation considering both technical and economical factors of the energy storage. During her MSc thesis, Saule compared and sized three different storage technologies (Li-ion batteries, flow batteries, and liquid air energy storage), considering their technical constraints. Later on, she introduced a cost per MWh curtailed, along with a cost per MW and MWh of energy storage installed, thus making the sizing algorithm subject to both technical and economical aspects. This MSc thesis is a fantastic example of how a supervisor can learn so much during a thesis project. Even though co-supervising Saule, so helping and supporting her work throughout the whole period, I must admit I have been learning quite a lot from both the topic itself, and the coding perspective too. Saule managed to summarize clearly and concisely the problem of wind curtailment in the UK, and presented majestically her work on her defense day! Great to see this! Local knowledge and research is so valuable to the Project

From working on a class project as a group of third-year bachelor students, to publishing the project in a scientific journal, something that never even crossed our minds. However, I am excited to announce that we exceeded ourselves and published our project in a scientific journal! 📝 This is an accomplishment that would never have been possible without the great teamwork between my co-authors Roy Venhovens, Remco in 't Veld, Rinze C., Sharif Khaleghparast, Bert Sadowski and myself. 🤝 Our study focused on a solar park project in the Netherlands. We conducted a Social Cost-Benefit Analysis to evaluate the socioeconomic impact of the park. The findings reveal a negative net present value for the project in its current. Therefore, we suggest a promising solution; to transform the business model of the park so that the park turns into a direct electricity seller for local residents. Once a budding pharmacist in college, EPRI’s Ronald Schoff quickly realized his interests and skills lay in chemical and process engineering. In his Chauncey Chat, recorded at EPRI’s annual Summer Seminar, Ron highlights the potential for first movers to shrink the technology gaps that would enable superhot rock geothermal to reach scale as an emission-free energy generation source. With a small footprint and minimal environmental impacts, superhot rock geothermal would provide up to 10X the energy per drilled well compared to conventional geothermal and would work almost anywhere. Ron describes how three important factors: depth, permeability, and reliable design, must be addressed to bring this particular type of geothermal generation to scale. ImpactWind summer school in 3-6 June in Bergen Welcome to the 2024 edition of #ImpactWind summer school! This year’s edition is hosted by the University of Bergen (UiB).   The aim of the summer school is to give an introduction to offshore wind development combined with more in-depth work with some topics. We're thrilled to announce that Ali khosravi, an esteemed Associate Professor at the Center for Industrial Mechanics, has been awarded a substantial Villum Young Investigator grant of seven million kroner. Ali Khosravi's project, 'DDPTX: Deciphering the Dynamics of Power-to-X Systems,' focuses on optimizing Power-to-X systems, which are pivotal in converting electricity from renewable sources like wind and solar into hydrogen. This hydrogen is then transformed into green fuel for various modes of transport. "It's not just a great honour to receive this grant; it's also a crucial moment in my research career. It's also recognition of the work my team and I have done in Power-to-X systems," says a grateful Ali Khosravi. Khosravi's work is not just pioneering but essential for our planet. By integrating Power-to-X systems with district heating networks and developing innovative models, he aims to enhance the production of green fuels, a critical component in our journey towards a sustainable energy system. Ali Khosravi is among 18 young talents awarded grants from the Villum Foundation's Young Investigator program out of 142 applicants. This year's focus on the environment and sustainability is exemplified by eight projects dedicated to these critical issues, including Khosravi's.
