Great session to kick off #DMWF from Bassam Sabry at IKEA who are celebrating their 80th anniversary - I rather liked how he shared their positioning as a world leader in life at home. He shared three words that encompass the IKEA ethos - Affordabiity, Accessibility and Sustainability. He outlined IKEA’s journey from multichannel to omnichannel with the customer at the heart of everything they do and the strategy is that the customer has a seamless experience however, wherever and whenever they shop. The App is key - and a consideration for every development and initiative is how will it work on the App. Key for IKEA in this digital transformation is to use AI ‘responsibly’ - they are focused and determined to use AI ethically with stringent governance in place. I’m rather intrigued about the new soon to be launched loyalty programme where we won’t be collecting points, but Alum keys! #digitaltransformatiom #digitalcustomerexperience #retail #ecommerce

First keynote at Shoptalk Europe with Alex Baldock, CEO, Currys plc interviewed by Joe Laszlo from Shoptalk was fascinating. Learning that beyond being a retailer of products - they also have a huge focus on services, in fact that have a 15% share of the services market and 20% of their customers purchase products with the retailers’ finance proposition. Alex shared that they have a huge focus on repairs, which generates £700m - one key differentiator is that Curry’s promises to repair a laptop in 7 days or give the customer a new one! (No wonder they have the biggest repair facility in Europe!) With protecting the planet in mind - from the many mobile phones that are traded-in - if they can’t be repaired/refurbished and resold - they are harvested for parts to repair those that can be. And if you wondered whether the people in Curry’s Ads were really Curry’s colleagues, Alex confirmed they were and they audition and pitch! Hands up—who hasn't lost a couple of hours on Temu, filled a basket, and not had 'check-out anxiety' when it came to completing the transaction as it was so cheap - I know I have! Well, then, we have all contributed to Temu’s owner, PDD Holdings, soaring profits and revenue for the first quarter ending March 31 - when profits rocket 275% year on year! But what I also found very interesting was a Forbes article by Cyrus F. that we are buying so much from SHEIN & Temu that the Air Cargo industry can't keep up - these two giant eCommerce sites ship the equivalent of 88 Boeing 777 freights of cargo worldwide a day!
