Ahead of the #SummitOfTheFuture, I joined 55 other youth experts to contribute to NORRAG on "Meaningful Youth Engagement: Time to Deliver". In this piece titled; Why Representation Matters, Matteo De Simone and I attempt to explain the protracted systemic imbalance in UN internships that have kept the already underrepresented group out of opportunities. For the Fair Internship Initiative , meaningful engagement means making UN internships quality, accessible, and PAID. This has the potential of drastically addressing inequalities—protecting economically disadvantaged families in the global south from poverty and beaming hope to the next generation of leaders with just one opportunity. Understanding the interconnectedness of income disparity at the family levels and youth development made me join FII to advocate for internship reform even as a child rights expert by practice. Today, I'm pleased to have co-authored with Matteo De Simone, the co-founder of Fair Internship Initiative and I thank the Ban Ki-moon Foundation, Global Partnership for Education and Learning Planet Institute for amplifying our voices. Did you know that women in the United States are breaking barriers and thriving in nontraditional occupations through apprenticeships? While historically underrepresented, today's landscape is changing rapidly. Apprenticeships provide a pathway for women to excel in fields traditionally dominated by men, from construction and engineering to technology and manufacturing. As we celebrate the achievements of women in apprenticeships, let's continue to champion diversity and inclusivity in all industries. Together, we're rewriting the narrative and creating a future where every woman has the opportunity to pursue her passions and reach her full potential. #WomenInApprenticeships #NontraditionalCareers #Empowerment #InclusionMatters

Black History and HBCU Talent! LISC is partnering with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) on an internship program that builds a diverse talent pipeline for CDFIs while offering paid professional experience to diverse undergraduate students of color. Learn more about the LISC HBCU Internship Program at https://lnkd.in/eZn3RTwG. View the link below to learn more about Sabrina Mohamed's internship experience!
Sabrina Mohamed, a senior at #HBCU Howard University, recently completed a 9-month paid internship with LISC, made possible by the support of the Citi Foundation. In this role, the political science major worked closely with LISC program experts to organize a small business development convening, conduct research on community violence intervention, and evaluate applicants for child care grants, among other projects. The work experience gave Mohamed a real taste of what it takes to make a positive impact on communities. “My favorite part was seeing how different local offices and communities had different approaches to similar issues. It really just emphasizes how important it is for us to support local initiatives.” Although her internship is over, Mohamed can still lean on LISC for support. She and other exiting HBCU interns now have access to an employment coach who can help fine-tune their resume writing, interviewing, and networking skills to find jobs in community development when they graduate. Now, that’s a great way to cultivate a diverse talent pipeline for our industry!

Employment Specialist I SEND Employability Trainer I Job Coach Trainer I Disability Confident Support
This is a brilliant example of how a Supported Internship programme looks in practice. But what strikes me most is how many amazing people will have a role in the delivery, each one playing their own part to change the lives of those young people. It really demonstrates the old saying that it takes a whole village to raise a child! But what works in your village (or town or city) is not necessarily going to be exactly the same. We need to connect all those stakeholders who are passionate to see these appalling employment stats change and build what works in every locality. If you feel challenged by the notion that it's acceptable that ANYONE could be leaving school this summer with only a *4.8% chance of getting into work, there are hubs in every area working to change this. You never know, it might be that you have that piece of the solution they are searching for! If it takes a community, maybe it's time to step up and be part of yours! *National average figure reported in December 2023. For further details see https://lnkd.in/ecQ2asX8
Associate Lecturer in Disability and Employment. PhD scholar: understanding ecologies of social inclusion as experienced by young people with disabilities within a Supported Internship.
I am thrilled to announce the launch of the Supported Internship Pilot at the University of Derby, in collaboration with St Martins School. This initiative marks a significant milestone in expanding work-based learning opportunities for young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) in Derby, addressing the current employment rate of only 1.8% among this demographic. Witnessing the interns develop crucial employability skills across various University departments has been profoundly rewarding. The unwavering dedication and passion of the individuals committed to enhancing the lives of young people with SEND is truly inspiring. This initiative's success underscores the transformative power of collaboration. I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to the key contributors who have made this programme possible: Sabrina Hobbs, the Executive Headteacher of St Martins; Anna D., the Programme Manager; Chris Hare, a Learning Mentor; Ryan Gascoine, a Transition mentor; Gaynor Delaney, Business Liaison supporting placements in Estates, Gavin Poyser CMgr MCMI a placement manager for the postroom; Dale Bryan, who manages catering placements at Aramark; Luke Schofield, a mentor and Head Chef of Aramark UK; Luke Gordon-Calvert and Nathan Robertson, mentors in widening access; Clare Towle CMgr MCMI, Manager for library placements; and Russell Lewis, who has a phantom of knowledge of University contacts and provides office and classroom resources . I hope this initiative serves as a powerful example to other businesses, encouraging them to host interns and collaborate with schools to equip their learners with critical skills, thereby facilitating a smoother transition from education to employment. Together, we can create a more inclusive and supportive environment where young people with SEND can thrive. By fostering partnerships between educational institutions and businesses, we can bridge the gap between education and employment, ensuring that every young person has the opportunity to succeed. Let this be a call to action for businesses to join us in this vital mission. By opening your doors to interns and engaging in collaborative efforts with schools, you can play a pivotal role in empowering young individuals with SEND to reach their full potential. Together, we can drive significant change and create a brighter future for all. https://lnkd.in/dzMdqXSn

Barrow Wise Consulting, LLC recently attended the InnovateED event hosted by the Universities at Shady Grove and the Montgomery County Economic Development Corporation (MCEDC). Key Montgomery County leaders attended the event and focused on advancing education, workforce, and economic development together. During the event, we discussed some significant points, such as the decrease in higher education enrollment and the possibility that the Montgomery County workforce may not be able to fulfill the increasing number of jobs that will be available in the coming years. As a team, we contributed to the discussion on cultivating the technical skills needed for our future workforce. We also discussed ways to give enriching experiences to K-12 students and internships to higher education students to help them acquire the necessary skills for their future careers. As a longstanding member of the Montgomery County community, we are committed to supporting this initiative in producing a qualified, high-performing workforce for upcoming opportunities. By working together, we can create a brighter future for our community. #InnovateED #MontgomeryCounty #WorkforceDevelopment #Education #EconomicDevelopment #BarrowWise #Trueconsulting

Some moments stay with you forever. In late 2018, I embarked on a rural internship that truly changed my perspective. We spent nearly a month in remote villages, far removed from the comforts we take for granted. Living in tents, braving the cold 4-degree nights, and working hand-in-hand with an NGO, we immersed ourselves in a world so different from our own. Each day, we’d venture into the heart of the village, and my group had the chance to visit schools. I’ll never forget the energy of the children—their wide, curious eyes as they learned their ABCs, the pure joy they found in something as simple as repeating the letters after me. In this video, I’m teaching the pre-primary kids, and it brings back a flood of memories. Their laughter, their enthusiasm, and their eagerness to learn—it was contagious. We didn’t just stop at the classroom. With the secondary students, we organized a community fair, teaching them life skills—how to make goods, sell them, and create something with their own hands. Some kids were skilled singers, others excelled at sports, and yes, some were avid PUBG players! XD But more than that, they were filled with potential, waiting to be unlocked. The fair wasn’t just about entrepreneurship—it was about instilling confidence, hope, and the belief that they could achieve something great. We even took the opportunity to educate the villagers about government schemes that could uplift their lives. This experience taught me the power of education, not only in the traditional sense but in the way it can ignite change, inspire growth, and build stronger communities. It’s an experience that continues to shape who I am today—reminding me of the importance of giving back, of learning through teaching, and of the resilience we all carry within us. Education has always been close to my heart, and moments like these reinforce its value. I am forever grateful for the chance to work with these incredible kids, to see the world through their eyes, and to contribute, in whatever small way, to their future. These memories are not just cherished—they’re a reminder that in giving, we receive so much more in return.
