“48% of (shelter) intake in the US were strays, and only 9% were returned to their owners” - those are heartbreaking stats. When a pet becomes lost, the best outcome is to get that animal back home, fast! The finder-to-foster program model works to do just this; keeping animals out of the shelter. And it’s had great success in the U.S.! Some shelters have doubled or even tripled return-to-home rates with the program, plus increased adoptions to boot. Jenifer Reed and Heather Kalman, who are with Human Animal Support Services at Austin Pets Alive! shared strategies with #ICAM2024 to successfully implement this type of program in your shelter.
