Rowan Moore features the Cole Store in this weekend's Observer article on the transformation of Britain's department stores. The design of the Cole Store refurbishment is being led by Allford Hall Monaghan Morris for developer Urban Splash. AHMM's Simon Allford is quoted saying that the Cole store, originally designed by his father David Allford, will be a “store for uses that will evolve over time, a container of the present and the future,” Read the full article in the The Guardian online below. #ColeStore #DepartmentStores #Transformation #HighStreets

Fairway invests £1.5m in flagship revamp Family-owned furniture and flooring retailer Fairway Furniture is to invest £1.5m revamping its flagship store. The four-store chain will remove all of the existing interior of its Plymouth branch and replace it with a new layout, allowing for a wider range product range within a fresh, contemporary shop-fit design. Work will begin next month and is scheduled to last for six months. Ahead of the work a three-week refurbishment sale will be held. The phased scope of the refurbishment will see the store trade from about 75% of its usual floorspace throughout the project’s four phases. The sixth-generation family business had begun planning the revamp before the Pandemic, but action was postponed until 2023. ‘Now is a great time to invest in our store estate after the turbulence of recent years and we are delighted to be making such a big investment into the city where the company first started. As the biggest furniture store in the region, we believe that this exciting new store design will make it a genuine destination for the area’s furniture buyers, encompassing both existing and new demographic groups,’ says Peter Harding, Fairway Furniture md. ‘The design work for this project began before the Pandemic when we engaged Somerset-based retail designer Spaceworks Interiors to develop an initial concept for a new store layout. The upheaval of the Pandemic meant we deferred taking it further, but in 2023 we commenced more detailed work and took the decision to target a spring 2024 start date.’ https://lnkd.in/e-srwM4Z #furniture #furnitureindustry

If Paul Revere were alive today, he may be hollering "The French Canadian are coming, the French Canadian are coming!" In this case, he wouldn’t be warning about French Canadian troops who were poised to attack colonists. Instead, he would be referring to the digitally native direct-to-consumer Montreal-based Cozey that’s testing the brick-and-mortar space by opening #popupstores in Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver and most recently south of the border — that is, the Canada-U.S. border — in Manhattan’s SoHo neighborhood. The New York store occupies a 12,000 sq.-ft. two-level space, and for efficiency, it also carries Canadian brand Luminaire Authentik’s high-end lighting products. That pop up lease ends on Jan. 10, 2025. According to Frédéric Aubé, Cozey CEO and founder, the modular home furnishings brand has had an online presence in the U.S. for a year, and this physical store, though temporary, gives Cozey the opportunity to directly engage with its communities. Cozey says the New York City pop-up is part of a larger strategy as it continues to “strategically expand its physical presence across North America and blend the ease of online shopping with the benefits of in-store shopping.” Hopefully, this experiment will result in a successful launch of stores throughout Canada and the U.S., and to enable the process, landlords are open to providing favorable lease terms to Cozey for short-term occupancy to thoroughly test its concept with customers at shopping centers coast to coast. After all, every retail chain started as a single store location. IKEA, the global home furnishings brand started in 1943 as a mail order business in Sweden. Today, there are 476 IKEA stores in 63 markets around the world. Cozey products, which include modular sofas and sectionals, modular sofa beds, lounge chairs, washable rugs and storage tables, are designed in Montreal, and are built by its manufacturing partners in China and Mexico.
