Homelessness is a traumatic experience and places enormous pressure on both physical health and mental wellbeing. In particular, rough sleeping, especially over a long period, is highly detrimental. Yet, despite having some of the most urgent health needs, people experiencing homelessness face multiple barriers stopping them from accessing healthcare quickly, including stigma, accessibility issues, and lack of support. This can result in both creating and exacerbating numerous chronic health issues, even when some are easily treatable. These severe conditions can go undiagnosed and untreated for a long time, even resulting in preventable deaths. We believe we need a renewed focus on prevention and early intervention. One way to do this is by building communities full of support networks and ways to improve daily wellbeing, including through access to things like exercise. Our #ThinkingDifferently manifesto is calling on political parties, policy makers and funders to: 🌳  Increase funding for community assets like parks, sports centres and libraries. 👩⚕️  Grow the children and young people’s mental health workforce and increase the training and support available to workers. 👩👩👦  Increase support for community-based early intervention services like family hubs. 🌈 Fund community-led early interventions for - and delivered with - marginalised groups. 📈  Build resources to study and act on local data about the root causes of mental ill health distinct to each community. A Public Health Resolution: Opening Doors and Hearts in 2024. Although the first calendar month of the new year is over, it is not too late to make a New Year's resolution that transcends beyond individual wellness and professional goals. Let us jointly confront the public health issue of homelessness through empathy and open-hearted actions. Homelessness is more than just a lack of shelter; it constitutes an intricate problem involving both physical and mental health. This year, let us strive to provide homeless people with access to medical care, support, and self-worth, rather than just housing. Empathy is an effective weapon for breaking down obstacles to public health, creating an atmosphere in which all individuals, regardless of living circumstances, have easy access to critical resources. We can all benefit from promoting policies that prioritise mental wellness services, reasonable housing costs, and supportive communities.
