Like many communities, the health system in greater Bloomington is overburdened, especially when it comes to mental health. The barriers that prevent our community members from accessing the health care they need are too great for simple solutions. At Bloomington Health Foundation, we’re taking a holistic look at these issues and working with local nonprofits, lawmakers, and clinicians to make our solutions more effective. We’re dedicated to empowering our community to tackle these challenges, including increasing access to mental health care. We believe we need a renewed focus on prevention and early intervention. One way to do this is by building communities full of support networks and ways to improve daily wellbeing, including through access to things like exercise. Our #ThinkingDifferently manifesto is calling on political parties, policy makers and funders to: 🌳 Increase funding for community assets like parks, sports centres and libraries. 👩⚕️ Grow the children and young people’s mental health workforce and increase the training and support available to workers. 👩👩👦 Increase support for community-based early intervention services like family hubs. 🌈 Fund community-led early interventions for - and delivered with - marginalised groups. 📈 Build resources to study and act on local data about the root causes of mental ill health distinct to each community. In the quiet corners of our communities, there are families grappling with the heavy burdens of trauma. Yet, despite the weight of their struggles, the basic support they desperately need is often just out of reach. We believe that the road to mental wellness begins at home with practical support, such as decluttering and deep cleaning. These actions are more than just chores; they are the first, essential steps toward healing and stability. However, startling data reveals a disheartening truth: vast amounts of government funds are funneled into interventions that, rather than lifting these families up, often bring them no substantial relief. It’s time to challenge the status quo and redirect these resources towards positive, practical support systems. We must raise our voices! It is unjust that those in vulnerable positions are overlooked and under-supported. Every family deserves to thrive in a nurturing environment, yet many are denied this basic right. 🤝 This is the core of our mission at Grant A Smile CIC. We exist to speak out, to step up, and to secure the early intervention supports that can truly make a difference. ✊ Let’s unite for the cause. Let’s demand better. For support, justice, and the dignity every vulnerable family deserves. #MentalWellness #JusticeForFamilies #SupportNotStigma #EarlyIntervention #SpeakUp #ChangeMakers #CommunitySupport #FamilyRights

September is Recovery Month worldwide! As a woman now visible in my own recovery, I’m thrilled to see messages like "Recovery Is Possible," "This Is What Recovery Looks Like," and ODAAT (One Day at a Time) shared here on LinkedIn and within our communities! We’ll see these messages spreading online from every corner of the globe—people unafraid to be recognized as individuals in recovery - for the entire month of September! If we could look back on the past 35 years since National Recovery Month was initiated by Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), we would see a growing trend: more and more people making their person recovery journeys visible to their families, neighbors, co-workers and communities. Even since I launched Journey in 2019, there's been a remarkable increase in the number of people, workplaces, and organizations eager to support the recovery messaging and movement in the communities where they live and work. The purpose of Recovery Month is to promote and support treatment and recovery practices, celebrate the strong and proud recovery community, and honor the dedication of service providers and community members who make recovery possible. AND for those quietly living their best lives in recovery and cheering it on - all the respect and love for you too! Not everyone needs to recover out loud - but I hope everyone with a desire is able to recover. However that works for them. Forever grateful. 2/12/93 #NationalRecoveryMonth #RecoveryIsPossible #RecoveryJourney #ODAAT

I think this presentation, particularly Enrico Castillos portion, should be manditory viewing for any housing organization but especially those that serve vulnerable populations. So many housing programs recreate punitive and re-traumatizing environments for their residents. I have seen this first hand from my work in Harm Reduction sites as well as other non-profit housing programs across the Greater Boston Area. There needs to be a structural shift away from the traditional (exploitative) landlord/property management model of housing, looking instead towards anti-carceral, housing first, and trauma informed models. Housing is a human right.

Please check out my most recent presentation: Health Equity Considerations for Housing Providers. I talked about reimagining our daily work, avoiding criminalization, addressing carceral elements in our organizations, and advancing trauma-informed housing. Grateful to be a part of the webinar, "Public Housing and Serious Mental Illness: Practical Recommendations for Housing Providers," organized by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Homeless and Housing Resource Center. Thank you Vanessa Schick, Christine Kilgallen, Allison Ponce, Jack Tsai, Jen Elder. And a special thank you to the amazing, inspiring work of Preservation of Affordable Housing and Invisible People, which I highlighted in my presentation.

Collective impact in action - Well done to the Holyoake team in your response during a very complex and tragic situation.
When tragedy falls upon a community the impact is widespread and devastating. It effects so many - from immediate families to friends and witnesses and on to response teams and emergency services. Holyoake supports the whole community through its mental health, AOD and suicide prevention services. I am disappointed but not surprised by the government’s decision not to include funding for early intervention support hubs in the budget today. We are facing a national mental health emergency and the government continue to ignore the needs of young people. Without urgent action this crisis will continue to worsen, ruining more young people’s lives. Half a million young people are waiting for support. A wait that can last up to 2 years. This cannot and must not continue. The government cannot afford for this to continue. This is a setback but it is not the end. I will continue to fight for a mental health system that supports every young person who needs it. #fundthehubs #endthewait YoungMinds #youthmentalhealth #mentalhealth #politics #downingstreet #budget #earlymentalhealthsupport #camhs #mentalhealthactivism #chancellor #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealthsupport

Henrico CASA prioritizes the mental health care of children and their families. Adverse experiences like abuse, neglect, and traumatic loss impact not only a child’s present mental (and physical) health, but their future health, as well. By intervening early and leveraging resources, we can mitigate what could be negative health outcomes in the future.
